Evangelion 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time, the final installment of Hideaki Anno's Rebuild of Evangelion film series, is coming to theaters in North America this December.

Rebuild of Evangelion is an updated remake and continuation of Anno's beloved 1995 series, Neon Genesis Evangelion. GKIDS announced earlier this year that it had acquired the rights to the Rebuild finale Thrice Upon a Time, and would release the movie in theaters before the end of 2022. Now, GKIDS has announced that it is teaming up with Fathom Events for exclusive screenings of the film, which will be held on Dec. 6, 8 and 11, only. Tickets for the screenings will become available starting Nov. 2.

Evangelion Thrice Upon a Time Poster

Thrice Upon a Time was originally released in theaters across Japan in 2021. Upon its release, the film was a critical and financial success, earning over 10.28 billion yen (about $85 million) at the box office and becoming Japan's highest-grossing film of the year. Although the Rebuild of Evangelion film series is available to watch digitally, GKIDS' theatrical release will mark the first time Thrice Upon a Time will be available in North American theaters.

About Evangelion

The story of Evangelion revolves around a 14-year-old boy named Shinji Ikari, who is one day summoned to the city of Neo Tokyo-3 by his father, who he has been separated from for years. Once there, Shinji unwillingly accepts the responsibility of piloting a giant mech named EVA01 to defend humanity from enigmatic invaders known as "angels." Aided by fellow pilots Rei Ayanami and Asuka Langley Soryu, Shinji works together with his father's organization NERV to not only fight the angels, but also to uncover the mysteries surrounding their existence.

GKIDS is an animation distribution company that handles the North American distribution of many famous animated works, including the Studio Ghibli library of films. To date, the company has scored an impressive 12 Oscar nominations, starting with The Secret of Kells in 2010. In 2021, GKIDS released the original 26-episode Neon Genesis Evangelion television series and the films Evangelion: Death (True)2 and The End of Evangelion on Blu-ray and digital download-to-own for the first time in North America. The company also handles distribution for Hideaki Anno's 1990 anime series, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water.

The entire Rebuild of Evangelion film series, including Thrice Upon a Time, is available on Prime Video. The original Neon Genesis Evangelion series is available to stream on Netflix.
