Hideaki Anno's Neon Genesis Evangelion anime ran from October 1995 to March 1996, producing 26 episodes. Set in an apocalyptic future, the story follows protagonist Shinji, who is recruited by his father to join the mysterious and shady organization Nerv. He and others pilot massive biomechanical robots known as Evangelions to battle giant monsters known as Angles. The anime is steeped in religious iconography from Shintoism, Christianity and Judaism and draws on the psychoanalytic theories of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the most influential shows ever made with homages and tributes to it featuring in other anime, including Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, SSSS. GridmanDarling in the Franxx and Attack on Titan. Similarly, the series influenced Western media, with references to Neon Genesis Evangelion appearing in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Regular Show, Gravity Falls and Steven Universe.

After the conclusion of the original anime, Anno created several films that expanded and recontextualized the story's conclusion, starting with 1997's The End of Evangelion. The final movie, Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01: Thrice Upon A Time, premiered in 2021 and was the year's highest-grossing film in Japan, beating out My Hero Academia: World Heroes Mission, Belle and Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet.

While it is currently unclear if Anno will ever return to the Evangelion franchise, the iconic director hasn't stopped working. His latest project, Shin Ultraman, is an adaptation of Eiji Tsuburaya's classic science fiction series, Ultraman. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters in Japan on May 13, and it is presently unknown if it will receive an international or North American release.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is currently available to stream on Netflix.
