Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, the fourth and final film in Hideaki Anno's Rebuild of Evangelion series, is topping the Japanese box office in its first week in theaters, making ¥3.3 billion (around $30.6 million) from 2.2 million admissions in 466 theaters since its release on March 8.

Around $7.3 million of Evangelion: 3.0+1.0's box office total came on the film's Monday opening day. $10.1 million came over Saturday and Sunday (unlike in the United States, Friday is not counted as part of Japan's weekend box office).

Around $3.4 million of the film's first week gross came from 38 IMAX theaters. Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 is second only to the record-breaking Demon Slayer - Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Movie: Mugen Train for the record of highest-grossing IMAX opening week for a Japanese film. It beat the record for the highest-grossing opening day in Japanese IMAX screens, grossing $740,000.

This one-week box office total more than the entire ¥3.3 billion (around $18.7 million) gross of Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, and larger than the first weeks for Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance (around $10.2 million, leading up to $40.3 million total) and Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo (around $28.8 million, leading up to a $59.9 million total).

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 arrives nine years after the previous Rebuild film; it faced multiple production delays and release date changes as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is supposed to be a definitive ending to the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise, which began with a 26-episode TV anime in 1995. International release plans have not yet been announced.
