X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse star Evan Peters came under fire for retweeting an anti-protest post on social media.

Peters' retweet, which has since been deleted, was of a post that read, "I can watch these piece of shit looters get tackled all day!" Peters did not write the tweet.

After deleting the retweet, Peters posted the black square on Instagram that supporters of the movement have been sharing over social media and an apology on Twitter.

"I don't condone the guy watching the news at all in the video which I have deleted," he wrote. "I unknowingly retweeted it. I'm deeply upset it got on my newsfeed. I sincerely apologize if anyone was offended. I support black lives matter wholeheartedly."

The statement comes following the death of a George Floyd at the hands of Officer Derek Chauvin in Minneapolis. It is the latest killing of an African America man by a white police officer. The officer has since been fired, arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter.

Over the weekend, protests erupted across the country, including Minnesota, New York, California, New Jersey, Texas, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Washington and Michigan. They have even spread across the globe, with demonstrations being held in London, Berlin and Toronto. While many of the protests have remained peaceful, some have fractured into violence and looting.

Aside from the X-Men franchise, Peters is known for his roles in American Horror Story, Pose and One Tree Hill.
