Funimation will bring EUREKA: Eureka Seven Hi-Evolution to theaters in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand in 2022.
The anime distribution company confirmed a theatrical release for the third and final film in the Hi-Evolution movie series during its panel at this year's New York Comic-Con. The Hi-Evolution trilogy features events set both before and after the original 2005 Eureka Seven anime series. The second film in the series, ANEMONE, was released in 2018, and EUREKA was original planned to debut shortly after it in 2019. However, the release of EUREKA was delayed by two years to early 2021 due to unspecified reasons, and was then delayed again by an additional few months due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The movie will now open in Japan on Nov. 26, with the newly announced international release happening sometime in 2022.
The new movie continues the story of the ANEMONE film, with the "real world" having merged with the virtual world created by the alien entity known as Scab Coral. Eureka, now several years older and unable to use the special powers that allowed her to communicate with and control the Scab Coral, now works for the military as a regular human being. A war begins brewing between the residents of the real world and the now displaced refugees from the virtual world, as Eureka is sent on a mission to protect a girl named Iris, who looks exactly like she did when she was younger, and also possesses many of the same special abilities.
The original Eureka Seven anime series, its 2012 sequel series Eureka Seven AO, and the first two movies in the Hi-Evolution trilogy were all written by Cowboy Bebop scriptwriter Dai Sato, but this movie will be the first animated entry in the franchise without Sato penning the story. Instead, the movie's script was written by Mobile Suit Gundam SEED's Yuuichi Nomura and director Tomoki Kyoda. The movie will feature an all new form for its flagship mecha, the sky-surfing Nirvash, which was designed by Evangelion's Yutaka Izubuchi. Many of the voice actors from the original Eureka Seven anime series will return to reprise their roles for the series' grand finale. Studio BONES, which has been involved with the franchise since the beginning, will return to handle the movie's animation.
