With excitement for Marvel’s next installment, Eternals, at an all-time high, a lot of fans are speculating on what the film might bring. After years of teasing elements such as the celestials and cosmic beings throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the film appears to be finally delving into the subject matter, with these superhumans being at the center of it.

However, after all the superheroes, gods and other powerful entities witnessed in the franchise, it does leave many to wonder where the Eternals fit and just how powerful they are. In fact, arguably the biggest question is whether they could defeat the Avengers. And while that might depend on the film’s interpretation of the characters, the comic series it is based on could contain some clues that answer that exact question.

Who Are the Eternals in the Marvel Universe?

Eternals Ikaris Celestial

In the comics, the Eternals are a virtually immortal race created by the Celestials, cosmic beings responsible for creating life in the Marvel Universe. They were essentially an offshoot of the human race and were initially made by their creators to defend Earth from outside threats. There are multiple generations of Eternals, all of which possess varying degrees of superpowers, and they tend to make little contact with their human relatives. This has given many of them a god-like status among humanity, as certain members of the Eternals, such as Ikaris and Thena, have been directly and indirectly associated with stories from ancient mythologies around the world.

They also have a large arsenal of superhuman abilities to draw upon, which they get through controlling and manipulating cosmic energy. This includes powers such as superhuman strength, flight, invulnerability, accelerated healing and the ability to shoot concussive energy from their hands and eyes. It should also be noted that each Eternal trains to achieve these abilities, and many of them specialize in a specific power skillset, tailoring it in a way that is unique to them.

However, the Eternals also have limitations, such as their innate inability to harm the Celestials. And while the one thing that comes difficult to them is death, they are not immune to it. It is, however, only under two very specific circumstances that they can die. They either must be severely injured, with damage being dispersed throughout their body, or the mental hold they have over their corporeal form must be broken in some way.

Who Are the Avengers in the MCU?

the-avengers-first-movie

The MCU’s Avengers are a group of heroes originally brought together by Nick Fury to protect the Earth from its greatest threats. The original core members consisted of Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, Thor, Black Widow and Hawkeye, but as time went by, the team’s roster had changed and evolved. Characters such as Scarlet Witch, Vision, War Machine, and Falcon would all find their place on the team, and even Spider-Man and Ant-Man were given the honor at some point. Due to this, the team's power level has constantly fluctuated over the years.

Furthermore, the group also split and disbanded by the time Infinity War came around, thanks in large part to the events of Captain America: Civil War. Now, with the repercussions of Endgame still being felt throughout the MCU, including the death and retirement of some of its key players, there is a big question mark hovering over the current status of the team. However, there is little doubt that the Avengers will return, both with old and new faces, somewhere down the line. And while fans will probably have to wait to know what the new roster will look like, there is a high chance that the next group of heroes will be more powerful than the last.

Eternals vs. the Avengers: Who Has the Most Power?

The main cast of the MCU's Eternals

While the debate seems mostly clear-cut as far as the power level is concerned, there is an argument to be had for both sides. As far as the comic’s version of the Eternals goes, they could wipe out most of the Avengers with not much of a problem. After all, they are nearly impossible to kill, and their ability to harness cosmic energy with little effort means they would probably be a bigger threat than Thanos in a fight.

However, with a character like the Hulk being seemingly unkillable, Thor being capable of going toe to toe with the likes of Captain Marvel and Scarlet Witch being one of the MCU's most powerful beings, there is just as likely of a chance that the Avengers could win a fight against them. There is also the fact that the MCU’s Avengers can be a near-unstoppable force when they are not at odds with each other. But even with this in mind, the chances of the Avengers surviving a battle against these god-like beings, even at their strongest, are probably slim.

To see how powerful the MCU makes this new group, Eternals hits theaters Nov. 5.
