Eternals introduces audiences to a new breed of superhero for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But aside from new powers and conflicts, there's also lore to be uncovered surrounding the Eternals. One example of this is the role of Prime Eternal, which Ajak initially holds before her death, at which point the title moves to Sersi. Ajak's death came due to her decision to defy Arishem's plan and stop the birth of a Celestial. But Sersi's new role may have been a part of a plan initiated by Ajak that will involve even greater implications for the MCU.

Ajak, who had known for millions of years the truth about why the Eternals were sent to different planets, also understood that defying Arishem is a nearly impossible task. As a result, she never went against him in the past. But upon seeing the promise of what Earth had to offer, she was more inclined to go against all she had known. The catalyst came when she learned of the Avengers stopping Thanos and bringing back half of all life in the universe. However, if she could not wholly succeed in her plan, she knew that Sersi would be the next option due to her love of humanity.

Like clockwork, Sersi almost immediately went against Arishem's plan and agreed that it was time for a change. Although she has now been taken to have her memories serve as tools for Arishem to judge Earth, Ajak likely knew that Sersi would be best equipped to make a difference. But beyond Arishem and his grand design, Ajak may have also known that defying the Celestials also meant a change in Earthly practices and taking a more proactive approach in the protection of Earth.

For centuries, the Eternals have been tasked with not interfering with the development of humanity. This included every aspect, such as conflicts. This rule was also why they didn't help when Thaos began his attack. However, now that things have changed, Sersi finally has the opportunity to help Earth more directly. She was also an Avenger in the comics and helped protect the Earth whenever she could. Knowing that as Earth's heroes continue to develop, they will need an Eternal to guide them, Ajak likely chose Sersi for that role.

In choosing Sersi, it becomes clear that without any coaxing needed, she would be the most likely Eternal to go out of her way to save a life and change the Earth in ways she never has before. This is teased in small ways, like how she protects Dane from Kro and decides to stop the emergence. But because Ajak was always bound to Arishem and his plan, it would be nearly impossible for her to act in ways Sersi did. However, as Prime Eternal, Sersi has the power to make real change.

With her new role chosen for her, Sersi will likely be an unconventional leader and advocate for certain Eternals to continue living their peaceful lives. But for herself, this is a second chance for her to make up for all of the centuries she spent standing to the side as humanity evolved and grew in front of her. Because of her empathy, Ajak knew that Sersi was destined for greatness, but now that these responsibilities have been thrust upon her, it is up to Sersi to be the hero she's always wanted to be for the MCU.

To see Sersi thrust into her new role, Eternals is streaming now on Disney+.
