Eternals is aiming to recontextualize the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Through this new collection of heroes, the film will explore how humanity grew from small villages to empires with the help of the Eternals. The trailers have given audiences a glimpse at what the past looked like. However, the film has yet to provide much context into when the present-day story will take place.

What is known as fact, thanks to its final trailer, is that the film takes place after Avengers: Endgame. This is explained when Ajak (Salma Hayek) explains to Ikaris (Richard Madden) that with Bruce Banner snapping his fingers and bringing back half of all life, this offered enough energy for the Deviants to return in an event called the Emergence. Ajak then tells Ikaris they have seven days to assemble the Eternals and stop the Deviants before things get out of hand.

What isn't explained is precisely when the seven days began. While the trailer would lead audiences to believe that this event was kickstarted the moment Banner snapped his fingers, that's actually not the case. In reality, the seven days are more likely to have begun months after the Blip was reversed.

During an interview with Empire Magazine, producer Nate Moore was questioned on the film's timeframe and where it falls in the MCU chain of events. Moore clarified the confusion, stating that Eternals happens "right around the same time as Spider-Man: Far From Home, with the world recovering from the attack of Thanos and the return of half the world population." Since Far From Home takes place during the summer of 2024, it's likely that Ajak only just found out, or was told by the Celestials, about the Emergence event and is scrambling to stop the Deviants.

Because the Celestials exclusively speak with Ajak, this paints a picture of how the Eternal's relationship with them is going at the time of the movie. If the Deviants have had months to grow in power and the Celestials knew, that could prove problematic in terms of trust because they willingly withheld information from the one person who speaks with them. But, on the flip side, this could also be a sign of how strong the Deviants have gotten since they managed to amass power unnoticed for months before the Celestials caught on.

Eternals will be a timeline-spanning adventure that will likely change everything fans know about the MCU. While most Phase Four projects haven't been released in chronological order, they are slowly painting a picture of what the future holds. At this point, it looks like Eternals will be painting the biggest picture of all and shows just how big the world is as more stories continue to be told.

To see how the film expands the MCU, Eternals debuts in theaters on Nov. 5.
