The first trailer for Eternals officially introduced the group of god-like immortals to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The teaser shows the titular Eternals' arrival on Earth and hints at the influence the group has had on humanity throughout its history. It’s implied in the trailer that the Eternals have primarily operated behind the scenes, keeping their presence and identity secret. Their existence in the MCU raises an important question: why did these powerful beings sit out multiple planetary and universe-threatening events? An Eternals merchandise leak may have solved this mystery, but it also creates a couple more.

The leak is from an unreleased calendar for Eternals, whose description may reveal some crucial details about what the Eternals were doing during Avengers: Infinity War and other major conflicts on Earth:

Living on Saturn's moon, Titan, the Eternals protect Earth from the Deviants - and all other forms of cosmic evil. This much-anticipated next big blockbuster from the Marvel Cinematic Universe is sure to have fans clamoring for more.

This new information may explain why the Eternals haven’t interfered with Earth’s most recent problems: they don't actually live here. The description suggests that they spend most of their time on Titan defending Earth from the Deviants and other threats. They may have influenced humanity throughout the millennia, but they have more important duties off-world. That being said, it's difficult to see how Thanos collecting the Infinity Stones and coming to Earth does not fall under the category of “cosmic evil.” Although the leak does raise more questions about the Eternals' recent activities, it also refers specifically to the Deviants, who very well may be the reason the Eternals haven't been active participants in the MCU.

Since they're constantly at war with each other, the Deviants could have prevented the Eternals from lending support in Earth’s most trying times. In the comics, Eternals and Deviants are both genetic off-shoots of humanity. They were created when the Celestials experimented on early humans to see what dormant powers they might possess. The Eternals are the attractive, god-like humanoids while the Deviants are rather monstrous-looking creatures who are prone to mutations. The two species have been locked in conflict with each other since their creation.

Maybe the threat of the Deviants has been so significant that the Eternals prioritized them or another enemy over a threat like Thanos. The Eternals also could've thought that the Avengers proved themselves as capable champions for humanity, and so left Earth's protection in their hands.

In a funny moment at the end of the teaser trailer, the Eternals reveal that they have knowledge of the Avengers and know who Captain America and Iron Man are, as well as what happened to them in Avengers: Endgame. It’s safe to say that the Eternals have at least been keeping tabs on the comings and goings of the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Now that there is a void in the MCU's hero pool, the Eternals might feel the time is right for them to step up and reveal themselves.

The leaked description may also indicate that the MCU is trying to merge the Eternals of Earth and the Eternals of Titan to remedy any confusion this might cause the audience. In the comics, there are the Earthborn Eternals and there are Titans, who are an off-shoot of the Eternals living on Saturn's moon. In the comics, Thanos is a Titan born with the Deviant gene, hence his nickname “The Mad Titan,” but in the MCU, he is from a planet called Titan, which is different from the Titan where the Eternals reside. The details can get confusing, but it seems like Eternals will try and clear up any confusion regarding potential conflicts with the MCU’s established lore.

The MCU's Eternals are a complete mystery up to this point. The teaser trailer provides some knowledge of the god-like beings who have been guiding humanity and influencing events across human history, but so much is still unknown. Their mysterious nature makes questions about their whereabouts interesting because the implications of the answer could change everything fans think they know about this fictional universe. Whatever happens in the film, Eternals will undoubtedly expand the MCU's scope and introduce fans to a new group of superpowered beings, opening the door for so many possibilities for what’s to come.

Directed by Chloé Zhao from a screenplay by Matthew and Ryan Firpo, Eternals stars Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Angelina Jolie as Thena, Barry Keoghan as Druig and Kit Harington as Dane Whitman/Black Knight. The film arrives in theaters Nov. 5.
