Kumail Nanjiani will maintain his physique from Marvel's Eternals for Hulu's Chippendales origin story.

The eight-episode limited series Immigrant will tell the story of Somen “Steve” Banerjee, the Indian American who founded male revue sensation Chippendales. Hulu ordered Immigrant straight to series. Nanjiani will star as Banerjee and executive produce the series alongside wife Emily V. Gordon, the pair behind Amazon Studios hit and Oscar nominee The Big Sick. Robert Siegel, who wrote Hulu's limited series Pam & Tommy, starring Lily James and fellow MCU star Sebastian Stan, will write and executive produce the series. Dylan Sellers, Rajiv Joseph and Mehar Sethi will also executive produce, and the latter pair will also write on the series.

Banerjee was born in Bombay and spent his time in America with a number of short-lived business ventures before buying a failing nightclub in Los Angeles. The introduction of a male revue was the first of its kind, and he eventually teamed with producer Nick De Noia to create a more theatrical take on the show. Banerjee's story then took a number of dark turns involving plots to kill De Noia and dancers he saw as rivals to his enterprise. He pleaded guilty to attempted arson, racketeering, and murder for hire after being arrested, and in 1994, was found dead in his cell.

Lost star Naveen Andrews played Banerjee in 2000's The Chippendales Murder and Shelley Malil played him in 2002's Just Can't Get Enough. Last year, Dev Patel was set to star as Banerjee in a film about his life from I, Tonya director Craig Gillespie.

Along with the upcoming Pam & Tommy limited series, Siegel is best known for writing The Wrestler and The Founder. Gordon recently wrote and produced for the Apple TV+ series Little America. She's also currently writing Your Name, the live-action adaptation of the critical and commercial smash-hit anime film. Joseph also wrote on Little America while Sethi is best known for writing on BoJack Horseman and Robot Chicken.

Nanjiani, meanwhile, went from stand-up comedy to starring on Silicon Valley but made waves after he bulked up for a role in Eternals. The Marvel movie, which was originally set to come out last year, will debut this November and tell a story spanning thousands of years about an ancient group of godlike beings. Nanjiani will play Kingo, who can manipulate energy but hides in the persona of a Bollywood star on Earth.

Aside from the upcoming MCU film and the Hulu series, which 20th Television is behind, Nanjiani will continue to call Disney home as he was recently cast in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series in an undisclosed role.
