Facebook users around the world are discovering that their check-in posts about going to see Marvel's new film, Eternals, in theaters are being flagged as spam by the social media giant.Due to the sheer number of posts made every day on Facebook, the company employs computers running algorithms, rather than actual human beings, to monitor everyone's feeds to see whether post violations are occurring. Some of these decisions have shown the limits of algorithms (Facebook seemingly has to routinely apologize for something that has gone wrong with its algorithms in one area of the site or another), but that has left users in a state of confusion, as whatever the reason for the posts being flagged (and none are readily apparent), they are being flagged throughout the world.RELATED: Why Eternals Is Getting Such Mixed Reviews

Facebook's "Check-in" feature allows users to utilize their location setting on their phones to let people know on the Facebook phone app when they are at a specific site or event. A common use of this function is to let people know when you're seeing a movie at a theater. However, despite posters using a function that Facebook itself supplies, posts where people "check-in" at a theater seeing Eternals have been routinely flagged as spam since the film was first released.

A Reddit post from an Australian poster asked whether other people in that country had been experiencing the problem, and they not only heard from other Australians, but responses from all over the world having that same problem (responses specifically from the United Kingdom, United States and India).

On Facebook itself, posters are sharing their reaction to their posts being flagged. One poster noted, "Apparently saying I enjoyed watching Eternals is Spam.....Go home Facebook, you're drunk," and another poster joked, "huh. i guess facebook didn’t like the movie…" Another poster joked that the whole thing was secretive marketing, "So, don't like Cineplex or is it the Eternals that you consider spam? Both? Ah... I get it... Just getting me all worked up so I will contact your support centre, so you can tell me all about Meta, right? Aggressive marketing, my dudes."

Users are sharing their experiences on other social media sites as well, like Twitter.

As noted, Facebook isn't particularly open about its algorithms, so unless these violations cease due to an adjustment with the algorithm, users are going to be at a loss as to why they can't post about watching Eternals.
