WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Marvel Studios' Eternals, now in theaters.

Eternals not only succeeded in being a "bold new step" for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it also set up future installments in cinema's biggest blockbuster franchise. In particular, one scene focusing on Dane Whitman (Kit Harrington) and a mysterious stranger may be the introduction to a modern classic superhero team...but not the one you might be expecting.

In the film's post-credits stinger, humble history professor Dane reveals to the audience that he has uncovered the Ebony Blade, a Whitman family heirloom of great power and tremendous danger. Dane tries to remove the sword from its scabbard but finds he can't bring himself to draw it. An offscreen voice then asks him, "Are you sure you're ready for that, Mr. Whitman?" before the screen cuts to black. As director Chloé Zhao revealed, the offscreen speaker is Blade, played by Mahershahla Ali.

The Daywalker officially joining the MCU is, of course, kind of a big deal. Blade has not only become a central fixture of Marvel's line of horror-themed characters but an A-list superhero in his own right, having fought on teams like MI-13 and multiple iterations of the Avengers. There could easily be a movie where Blade teams up with radically different characters like Captain America or Thor. However, given recent Marvel news, it's entirely possible Blade may be forming his own team of paranormal adventurers to deal with more mystical threats to the world: the Midnight Sons.

Formally debuting in 1992, the Midnight Sons were a team made of various Marvel heroes with mystical backgrounds: wizards, demons, monster hunters and everything in between. Their duty was to protect the streets of New York from occult threats that might be too strange (or perhaps too small) for the globe-hopping Avengers, something of a precursor to what DC Comics did with Justice League Dark. The Sons had their heyday across the early '90s, but have stuck in the minds of fans and creators since, with occasional reunions and shout-outs to the team persisting across the decades.

Membership in the Midnight Sons has been wide and varied, with Blade and his cohorts in the Nightstalkers being regular participants in their escapades. Dane Whitman's superhero alter-ego, the Black Knight, was never a member himself, but it's not hard to imagine that a medieval knight with a magic sword would join a team of monster hunters. Even still, Marvel has been quietly adding to the ranks of potential members over their many films.

Of course, the big one is Doctor Strange. It's no surprise that a team of magical characters would have a place for the Sorcerer Supreme. While the doctor himself may not be a member of the team -- he seems intent on spending time with more A-list heroes -- it isn't hard to imagine that someone from his orbit (Wong, perhaps?) could represent that corner of Marvel's mysticism on the team. However, there are even more lesser-known heroes coming to the MCU who could join Blade's new Midnight Sons.

Currently, Marvel Studios is working on a Moon Knight show for Disney+. The series stars Oscar Isaac as Marc Spector, an ex-mercenary who is empowered and equipped by the Egyptian moon god Khonshu to protect those who travel by night and bring vengeance onto evildoers. Like Blade, Moon Knight has been a staple of the Midnight Sons since its inception, so it's easy to imagine him crossing over with the Daywalker in a future MCU project. It's even been rumored that Mahershahla Ali will appear in Moon Knight, lending credence to the idea of a team-up between the two heroes.

Marvel also recently announced a Halloween special starring another Midnight Sons member, Werewolf By Night, with Gael García Bernal being cast in the lead. Meanwhile, Season 4 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. introduced Gabriel Luna as Robbie Reyes, the latest hero to wear the mantle of Ghost Rider and another magical character in the MCU's collection. A spin-off series starring Luna was in development at Hulu but was canceled before it got a chance to finish. It's possible Ghost Rider's story could continue with the Midnight Sons.

Morbius the Living Vampire

Of the potential Midnight Sons members on the horizon, Morbius remains the most up in the air. While the Living Vampire originates from the realm of science-fiction rather than fantasy, he's still very much a horror character and a founding member of the Sons. Morbius is set to star in his own feature with Jared Leto in the title. However, because it's technically a Sony movie, the company has kept vague on the character's place in MCU continuity. However, given that Morbius began as a Spider-Man villain and is likely to face off against the Web-Slinger in a future project, he shouldn't be counted out just yet.

This is but one of the directions Marvel could take its characters after Eternals. Blade and the Black Knight could just as easily be gearing up to join Excalibur, Great Britain's premier superhero team. However, given the MCU's propensity for crossing genres, it wouldn't be surprising to see the company mix an Avengers team with a generous amount of horror.
