Reliable industry insider KC Walsh revealed on social media that both Shang-Chi 2 and Eternals 2 have been added to Marvel Studios' internal production calendar. While Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings receiving a sequel has been more a matter of "when" and not "if," the news that Eternals is receiving a sequel (while certainly set up with the ending of the original Eternals film) is the more surprising news. This announcement comes after Marvel Studios recently rearranged its release order for Phase 5 of the MCU, so it is unclear how this will change the release order for Phase 5 and Phase 6.RELATED: RUMOR: Shang-Chi Sequel Coming in 2025, Director Returning

Is Shang-Chi 2 Coming?

A constant in discussions about Marvel Studios' release schedule is the fact that these release schedules only take into account the publicly revealed films that will be on the schedule. There are always other films that are going to be part of the schedule, with it just being a question of where they will fit in. For instance, while Deadpool 3 was recently added to the schedule as the final film of MCU's Phase 5 (at the moment), it was only a matter of when it would be added to the schedule, not if it would be added.

A sequel to the hit Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was always likely, but it was confirmed at the end of 2021. Therefore, when Marvel Studios released a schedule for Phase 5 and Phase 6 that didn't include the sequel on it, no one really believed that the film was not happening, but just that, like Deadpool 3, it was a question of when they would announce it. It appears that we are getting closer to that announcement, if Walsh is correct.

Eternals' Surprise Sequel

A sequel to Eternals, on the other hand, has always been more speculative than a sequel for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. It was less of a box office success than Shang-Chi, and had a much lower Cinemascore (Shang-Chi had an A, while Eternals had a B, tied with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania as the lowest Cinemascore in MCU history).

Patton Oswalt caused a stir when he seemingly confirmed that a sequel was happening last year, but it turned out that he was simply reading into the fact that his mid-credits appearance as Pip the Troll, which was clearly setting up a sequel was, in fact, meaning that a sequel was happening. That the film ended on a cliffhanger certainly made it clear that Marvel Studios had a sequel in mind, but Walsh's report is the first sense we have that those plans are coming to fruition.
