Eragon is coming to Disney+.

As reported by Variety, a live-action series adaptation of the young-adult fantasy novel Eragon is currently in early development at Disney+. The show will be based on the novel series written by Christopher Paolini, titled The Inheritance Cycle, which consisted of four books. Eragon is the first book in the series.

Paolini will serve as a co-writer and co-showrunner on the upcoming series, with Bert Salke set to executive produce under his Co-Lab 21 banner. 20th Television will produce. This is not the first time Eragon has been adapted for the screen. A film of the same name was released in 2006 and received largely negative reviews from both critics and fans of the original books, as it deviated heavily from the source material. Overall, the film was a box office failure, only grossing $250.4 million from a $100 million budget. Eragon was intended to launch a film franchise, but its poor performance led to the cancellation of future projects based on The Inheritance Cycle.

2006's Eragon starred Ed Speelers as Eragon, Rachel Weisz as the voice of the dragon Saphira, Jeremy Irons as Brom and John Malkovich as Galbatorix. Casting information regarding the Disney+ series has not yet been revealed, as the series itself has not been officially confirmed by Disney or 20th Television.

News of another Eragon adaptation comes after a fan-led social media campaign began circulating in 2021, under the hashtag, #EragonRemake, which called for Disney to take another shot at the fantasy series. Along with fans of the series, the campaign was encouraged by Paolini himself. "Bring the thunder Alagaësians! Let [Disney] hear you roar!" the author wrote on Twitter at the time. "Use the hashtag #EragonRemake, mention [Disney] in the body of the tweet, and let them know we want to see a proper Eragon adaptation!"

Eragon was self-published by Paolini in 2002 before being republished in 2003 by Knopf, which would publish the subsequent three books in the series: Eldest in 2005, Brisingr in 2008 and Inheritance in 2011. Over 41 million copies of the series have sold worldwide. The series follows Eragon, a farm boy who discovers a mysterious stone that turns out to be a dragon egg, hatching a dragon he later names Saphira. With the help of his mentor Brom, Eragon becomes a Dragon Rider and he and Saphira set out to defeat the evil King Galbatorix, who seeks to capture the dragon for himself.

Eragon does not have a release date.
