Avengers: Endgame co-screenwriter Stephen McFeely revealed that the film's initial script didn't feature our heroes returning to 2012's The Avengers.

During a recent watch party of Avengers: Endgame, McFeely said, "First draft, we did not go back to Avengers 1...which was a mistake." No specific reasons were given as to why he and co-screenwriter Christopher Markus chose this direction for the first draft.

Released in 2019, Avengers: Endgame involved the heroes traveling to various moments in their history in order to retrieve all of the Infinity Stones. This included them returning to the chaotic New York battle scene depicted in 2012's The Avengers.

Directed by Joss Whedon, 2012's The Avengers featured the first time Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, the Hulk and Hawkeye were all shown on screen together.
