Black Widow's sacrificial death was an emotional and pivotal moment in Avengers: Endgame, but Scarlet Johansson reveals that it wasn't originally scripted that way.

"Nat’s final hero moment, where she sacrifices herself for the Soul Stone, was originally filmed as a chase scene with an 'army of Dementor-type creatures,'” Johansson said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “I was thinking, ‘Parents will never forgive us for how these creatures look.'”

The movie already had plenty of action and villainous characters, however, but not so many scenes of emotional intensity, so the scene was reshot. “We wanted to leave [the audience] with the weight of that loss and the shock of it,” Johansson added.

In the film, Natasha sacrificed herself on the planet Vormir so Jeremy Renner's Clint Barton could collect the Soul Stone in an effort to defeat Thanos. The two characters battled each other attempting to prevent the other from undertaking that heroic but fatal move. For one to claim the stone, the other had to be sacrificed, according to the Red Skull, the stone's shadowy guardian.
