The newest Disney animated movie Encanto is taking the world by storm with its insanely catchy soundtrack and incredible, family-oriented story. It follows Mirabel Madrigal, a young girl who is the only one in her family to not receive a magical gift from the miracle that protects their family and their home. Always feeling like she's not good enough for her family because of this, Mirabel gets a chance to prove herself when the miracle seems to be in danger. Ultimately, Mirabel's gift is her ability to love and bring her family together after being splintered apart by pressure and tension.

Because of the magical nature of the story and the fact that the story uses a lot of metaphors and themes to convey context and importance, Encanto has sparked so many fan theories about Mirabel, the miracle and the truth about the gifts. In particular, one fan theory gives Mirabel's grandfather Pedro a more magical backstory that helps to explain Mirabel's unlikely situation.

Pedro Madrigal Encanto Death

The Reddit fan theory from user stategate suggests that Pedro was secretly a magician of sorts and carried the magic of the miracle within him before his demise. At the beginning of Encanto, it's shown that Pedro sacrificed himself so that Alma, their children and the village could escape to safety, and this is what causes the miracle to begin, forming the Encanto. But the fan theory says that Pedro simply transferred his latent magical powers to the candle. He goes up against his murderers unarmed, seemingly demonstrating the futility of his attempt. The theory implies that he does this because he knows that when he dies, his power will transfer to the candle and ultimately protect his family.

This can also be proved by way of the image of the butterfly, which seems to represent Pedro throughout Encanto. The instant that he dies, the candle becomes adorned with a butterfly pattern and lights up with the magic of the miracle -- almost as if Pedro himself has transferred into the candle. At the very least, his powers did.

Encanto Mirabel Mom

This theory also ties Pedro's magical background to why Mirabel doesn't get a special gift. The theorist suggests that Mirabel inherits Pedro's magical abilities, so she doesn't need any other gift. This can be seen in a variety of ways throughout Encanto, most notably through Mirabel's special connection to the magical casita. Unlike most of her family, she is seen communicating with the house like it's a person, and the casita responds in kind by reminding her not to be late in one scene and helping her save the candle in another.

Another way that Pedro's magic could be manifesting in Mirabel is seen when they rebuild their house at the end of the movie. When Mirabel attaches the final doorknob to the house, the casita is once again filled with the magic of the miracle, which stems from her own hands. If Mirabel didn't have any magic, she might not have been able to reinstate the power of the miracle into the house, but she seems to be the only one who can do so.

Other theories point out that Mirabel and Pedro share a special connection, but this one gives their relationship an extra special and on-theme backstory that easily explains both the absence of Mirabel's gift and her importance in the family. Though Pedro is not alive during the time of the story, his influence over his family and their love for one another lives on through Mirabel and the Encanto that she's helped to rebuild.
