Encanto is a visually stunning film that has a large cast of likable characters. These characters get a surprising amount of development, considering the fact that there are so many members of the Madrigal family. They behave and interact with each other in believable ways, making them relatable despite the fact that most of them were blessed with powers.

Encanto tackles issues of family, insecurity, and so many things that make it relatable to many of the people who have watched it. Its themes and its characters make the film timeless, although not every character hits the mark. Some characters do not play too big of a role, or they are unlikable for too much of the film, even if they do manage to redeem themselves in the end.

13 Dolores Told Everyone Mirabel's Secret Despite The Consequences

Dolores holds a hand up to her ear

Dolores was given the gift of enhanced hearing, as she is able to hear a pin drop from a mile away. This means that she has dirt on just about everyone, and is the first person people go to if they want information.

Dolores overhears Mirabel and her father discussing the prophecy, and despite their warnings for her to keep silent, she can't help but tell everyone at the table, right before Isabela was about to get engaged to Mariano. Considering that Dolores had feelings for Mariano, it's easy to speculate that she spilled Mirabel's secret at this time on purpose.

12 Alma Set A Poor Example For The Younger Generations

Alma holds the candle

Alma may not have been one of the worst Disney grandparents, but it was incredibly difficult to like her for most of the movie. She starts off as a doting grandparent then changes into one who accuses Mirabel of being some kind of curse and a bad influence on the rest of the family.

The members of the family with gifts were shouldered with sky-high expectations, and she even told young Antonio that they should discuss what he should do for the family right after he got his powers. To her credit, she does have a good reason for clinging to their gifts so much, and she admits to her wrongdoings, making amends with Mirabel.

11 Félix Has No Powers But Treats Mirabel Like The Other Members Of The Family Do

Felix smiles in front of Pepa's door

Félix married into the family, so he was never blessed with powers the way that his wife Pepa was. Despite having no powers, he doesn't seem too understanding of Mirabel's situation, since he was never expected to have any powers, and his children received gifts.

10 Camilo Is A Shapeshifter Who Is A Prankster & A Comedic Relief

Camilo smiles in front of his door

Camilo is a friendly teenager who takes after his father, although his constant shapeshifting makes him seem much more energized. He will take on just about any person's appearance, often mimicking the people around him and sometimes even casually wearing anyone's skin for no apparent reason.

He plays more of a comedic role in the film, especially during hilarious moments when the house's magic is going haywire and his head transforms into that of a baby.

9 Pepa Has The Coolest Power

Pepa smiles in front of her door

Pepa has the power to control the weather through her emotions. The weather is bright and sunny when she is happy, and her bad moods bring rain and storms. She is described as an overly emotional person, but she can typically keep her moods in check once she takes a moment to breathe.

Thanks to her powers, Pepa is the most honest person in the Madrigal family, as it is impossible not to tell what she is thinking.

8 Pedro Sacrificed Himself For His Family

Pedro and Alma in the family tree

Audiences weren't able to see much of Pedro. From flashbacks within the film, he was portrayed as a kind person who cared deeply for his wife and children. When they were pursued by unnamed attackers, he was willing to run back and sacrifice himself in order to give his family a chance to escape.

His sacrifice wasn't made in order for his family to get the blessing but was made out of pure selflessness.

7 Isabela Isn't As Perfect As She Seems On The Surface

Isabela swings from a vine

Isabela seemed shallow at first, boasting about her perfection and even seeming to bask in it. In reality, it was all a façade, and the reason why she butted heads with Mirabel so much was that she made Isabela's façade crack.

It turned out that she was only willing to get married for the sake of the family, and never really had the freedom to create what she wanted. When she found a new way to express herself, she was able to grow closer to Mirabel, who fully supported her growth.

6 Agustín Tried To Protect His Daughter From Alma

Agustin gives a thumbs up with his family

At first, it seemed like Agustín was only present to act solely as comedic relief. He was seen with a bloated face on multiple occasions, a result of some nasty bee stings. However, the few scenes that he spoke in were surprisingly powerful.

He tried to hide the prophecy from the rest of the family because he wanted to protect his daughter, knowing that they would not interpret it well. He was willing to stand up to Alma, something few members of the family had the bravery to do.

5 Julieta Was Mirabel's Biggest Supporter

Julieta holds Mirabel's hand after healing her with her cooking

Julieta was the most supportive and understanding when it came to Mirabel's predicament. She herself had a gift, which allowed her to heal anyone who consumed her cooking, but she never once judged Mirabel for not having one.

She was sweet and affectionate, and always willing to hear Mirabel out. It was relieving to see that Julieta was not influenced by Alma's views of Mirabel like many of the other members of the family.

4 Antonio Can Talk To Animals & Shares A Close Bond With Mirabel

Since Mirabel never got her own room, she stayed in the nursery, which allowed her to grow close to Antonio before he got a room of his own. Antonio was a sweet child, torn between wanting to please the rest of the family, and wishing that he wouldn't get a gift so that Mirabel wouldn't be alone.

He was a perceptive child, knowing that there were consequences to each outcome and responsibilities that came with his powers.

3 Luisa Slowly Embraced The Fact That She Didn't Have To Put On A Strong Façade

Luisa catches Mirabel

Luisa's powers came with some of the biggest expectations. Thanks to her immense physical strength, she was expected to use it to help everyone in town. She lost sight of herself, uncertain of what would be left if she ever lost her powers.

She wasn't given a chance to do what other people would at her age, nor was she able to express vulnerability until after she lost her powers. She showed audiences that a gift doesn't make the person.

2 Mirabel Is The Relatable & Well-Intended Protagonist

Mirabel stands outside of Pepa's door

It was easy to root for Mirabel. Although she was treated like the odd one out, she never seemed to really want powers as much as she wanted to fit in. Her main goal throughout Encanto was to do something good for her family.

Through her hard work, she was able to bring her family back together again, and she helped some of them freely express themselves in ways they were too afraid to before.

1 Bruno Gave Up Everything For His Family

Bruno and Mirabel stand together and stare

Bruno is the most likable, but most tragic member of the family. He was blessed with the power to see the future, but no one liked him since it seemed like he was cursing people with misfortune. When he foresaw fragments of Mirabel's future, he knew that his family would assume the worst. In order to protect her, he was willing to hide both the prophecy and himself.

Unable to leave his family, he lived within the walls, even setting up a heartbreakingly sad place for himself by the family's table. He did all of this, never expecting to be thanked, so fans were happy that he got a happy ending too.
