Encanto is a Disney film released in 2021. Based in Columbia, it follows a super-powered family with relatable themes. Instead of a crime-fighting superhero arc, the story centers around family dynamics and the expectations that come with having incredible gifts.

Encanto was positively received by audiences. In part, this is due to a large number of unique elements many Disney films preceding don't have. And although there are several reasons to love the film, it does have a few flaws that especially stick out during a second viewing. Some of the plot points, although minor, either aren't developed enough or don't make logical sense in the context of the story.

10 Best: The Family Fixed The House By Hand

After losing their house, the Madrigal family finally made amends with each other. And although they realized they didn't need their powers, the fact they used them to help others meant the townspeople were willing to lend a hand reconstructing their home.

Doing the entire renovation without their powers emphasizes the strength of the bonds they made. Despite not having magic, they were still able to accomplish great things.

9 Didn't Work: Some Townspeople Didn't Know Mirabel Didn't Have Powers

Some people, particularly the children, had no idea Mirabel didn't have powers. Considering Alma made a point of making each child's acquisition of power a huge spectacle, it's highly unlikely no one in town would know Mirabel didn't have any.

Although this fact was a source of shame for her family most of the movie, it wasn't a heavily guarded secret since she and other members of Mirabel's family awkwardly revealed the truth to the kids who were following Mirabel.

8 Best: The Characters And Their Problems Were Relatable

For many viewers, the characters and their problems were painfully relatable. It isn't uncommon for some people to feel pressured to live up to the expectations of their family, which can often feel crushing.

Those with siblings also understand what it's like being compared to each other, and many fans have commented how they understand what it's like to love a family member yet constantly butt heads with them – similar to Mirabel and Isabela.

7 Didn't Work: Bruno Was Alienated For His Powers

Mirabel and Bruno stare - Encanto

Bruno was granted one of the most useful powers. He was able to view the future. And although he hadn't fully mastered his skill (likely due to people hating his predictions) people assumed he was responsible for the misfortunes he predicted. However, this assumption didn't help them avoid the futures he warned them about. And it wasn't like Bruno only predicted bad things: one of his predictions gave Mirabel hope.

6 Best: There Is One Setting And No Villain But The Story Still Works

Antonio enters his room for the first time

The entirety of the film takes place in and around the magical Madrigal house. However, there is no sense of confinement. After all, many of the rooms lead to large and spacious magical worlds, which helps the viewer forget that Mirabel is still in the house.

There is also no villain in the film. However, there doesn't need to be since the main conflict is rooted in family dynamics. For those who are tired of Disney's twist villains, this film is a nice change of pace.

5 Didn't Work: The Magic To Keep People Out Is Hardly Addressed

Although the single setting works, the film fails to address the family's plans for the future. The magic not only gave members of the Madrigal family powers, but it also kept people from the outside getting in.

Although no one had any desire to leave, rather than being a safe haven, it was briefly addressed how the home was like a prison. Alma mentioned she'd never been able to go back to the place she lost her husband until the end of the film.

4 Best: The Main Cast Gets Their Fair Share Of Screen Time

Viewers of the film learned a lot about the cast – not only through the introductory song that explained their powers, but because the film was able to divide time between the family members.

Some characters enjoyed more screen time and development than others; however, fans gained a good sense of what their relationships with Mirabel were, including their struggles and fears.

3 Didn't Work: Everyone Got Their Powers Back

Luisa lifts something heavy

Since Encanto was a Disney movie and animated Disney films usually have a happy ending, most people expected the family to get their powers back. However, it didn't feel like they needed their powers or a fancy house in the end. The main problem with their family issues was resolved, and Alma and Mirabel even stated they felt like the house they built suited them because it was as imperfect as they were, yet still functional and full of love.

2 Best: The Visuals And Music Are Incredible

The visuals and music of the film stand out as being some of Disney's absolute best. Each song has a purpose, and the visuals that go along with it are big, colorful, and most of all, memorable. When talking about the movie, many people pointed to these two things as being some of the absolute best parts of the film. Consequently, this makes the film similar to Frozen, which uses similar magical powers and powerhouse vocals to impress audiences.

1 Didn't Work: The Bruno Song Doesn't Age Well

Bruno tries to stay hidden from the family

The Bruno song is actually one of the best-written and catchiest songs in the entire movie. In hindsight, the song is terribly sad after the first time Encanto fans hear it. The family is singing about how Bruno was a terrible person who used his gift in malicious and cruel ways, yet the person being sung about is in the same house, possibly listening to their harsh words. Even the other townspeople join in, making fans feel even more sorry for poor Bruno.
