For Marvel fans, "Avengers Assemble!"  is an iconic phrase that's yelled on the battlefield of Avengers titles by the likes of iconic heroes such as Captain America and Iron Man. Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe had to wait over ten years before finally witnessing Captain America use the battle cry in Avengers: Endgame, when all of Earth's Mightiest Heroes charged into battle against the Mad Titan, Thanos.

Those two words are typically saved for whoever is the designated leader of the Avengers at that time, though it isn't always reserved for the household names. Just like any hero in the Marvel Universe can be called upon to join the Avengers, the same can be said for announcing the team's slogan. A perfect example of this comes in Empyre: Avengers #0 when a  resurrected Avenger makes a surprising return to debut his personal remix of "Avengers Assemble!"

Avengers Swordsman Empyre

The issue sends Earth's Mightiest Heroes to the Blue Area of the Moon to investigate a distress call for help. Once they arrive, the Avengers are stunned to see a garden growing, with the blue surface now replaced with green foliage. Another surprise comes when a half-Kree, half-Skrull sentry attacks them. The beastly drone is powerful enough to take out the Avengers' heavy-hitters like  Thor and Captain Marvel, but they're rescued when the Swordsman, a reincarnation of their old teammate Jacques Duquesne, the Swordsman, leaps onto the scene. As his attack slices off the sentry's, Swordsman belts out an enthusiastic, "Avengers Attack!" battle cry.

Created by Stan Lee and Don Heck, Swordsman first appeared in 1965's Avengers #19. He began his career as a nemesis to Hawkeye, though later is responsible for training Hawkeye in various weapons; specifically, his mastery of a bow and arrow. However, Swordsman was a proud man, letting his self-loathing get the best of him when he decided to betray the Avengers after being overlooked for too long. A conflict with Kang the Conqueror and his search for the Celestial Madonna resulted in Swordsman sacrificing himself to save his teammate, Mantis. This sacrifice proved Swordsman was worthy enough to be reborn with the life essence of a Cotati, making him half-undead man, half-alien plant.

If you are going to make a grand entrance and reintroduce yourself to readers who may not be familiar to you, there is no better way to do it than in the opening salvo of a blockbuster summer event series like Empyre. Swordsman shows tremendous bravery by saving the paralyzed Avengers and offering them an opportunity to rejoin the fight against the sentry. He also is able to convince the Avengers to help the Cotati fight off the incoming Kree-Skrull empire, now under the leadership of the former Young Avenger Hulkling. What they aren't aware of is this will put the Avengers in direct conflict with the Fantastic Four, who appear to be on the side of the Kree-Skrull Empire.

With all of that in mind, it probably won't be long before Swordsman has to use his Avengers battle cry again.
