Empire Strikes Door: New Fan Film Explores Star Wars' Weirdest BTS Mystery

Chewbacca Stormtroopers

One of the greatest bloopers to make it into a final film in all cinematic history is an errant Stormtrooper in 1977's Star Wars: A New Hope who accidentally bumped his helmeted head on an opening door as he entered a Death Star control room to confront C-3PO and R2-D2.

Retained across all the various revisions to the iconic space opera film, the 2004 DVD release of the movie even added an audible sound effect to playfully make the gaffe more noticeable. Despite this, the identity of the Stormtrooper in the scene has never been definitively confirmed and stands as the central subject of a new fan documentary, The Empire Strikes Door.

The exhaustive investigation sees several diehard Star Wars fans and historians search for the identity of the extra that committed the on-screen error, narrowing down their hunt to three potential extras from the original film.

Running just over 40 minutes, the fan film provides a behind-the-scenes look at the infamous blink-and-you-miss-it moment while reaching its own verdict on the Stormtrooper's true identity.
