The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards, honoring the best in primetime television in the United States, are just a little over a week away. The ceremony will be taking place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, Sept. 22, with a live broadcast set to air on Fox at 8 pm EST.
This year's ceremony, for just the fourth time in the history of the Emmys, will not feature a host, a decision which was made by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences to instead honor departing shows like HBO's Game of Thrones, the final season of which just set a new record for Emmy nominations with 32 total, including 14 major nods. HBO also led the way in major awards nominations by a Comedy series for the second season of Bill Hader's Barry, while Ava Duvernay's Netflix miniseries, When They See Us, earned 11 major nominations, tops for a Limited Series/Television Movie.
The Television Academy considers Drama, Comedy and Limited Series/Television Movies the major contenders, and hands out major awards for programs, lead and supporting acting, as well as directing and writing for those three areas. These are the awards that will be the ones handed out during the live broadcast on Sept. 22.
Other aspects that go into creating any television program, including casting, cinematography, costumes, hairstyling and makeup, among many others, are instead honored at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which are set to take place over two nights, on Sept. 14 and Sept. 15 at the Microsoft Theater. The Creative Arts Emmy Awards will not be broadcast live, but can instead be viewed during a broadcast on Sept. 21 at 8 pm EST on FXX.
Ahead of the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards, we've detailed when and how audiences will be able to tune in to the live broadcast come awards night. This breakdown will be limited to the United States and Canada, however international audiences can find out how to watch a live broadcast on the Emmys website.
In the U.S. and Canada, the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards can be viewed live on Fox at 8 pm EST/5 pm PST. Audiences in Central and Mountain time zones can tune in at 7 pm CST and 6 pm MST, respectively. Viewers will also be able to stream the ceremony live using FOXNOW, Hulu with Live TV, fuboTV, PlayStation Vue, YouTube TV, AT&T TV NOW or Sling TV.
Fox will also be airing a Live Red Carpet Pre-Show from 6:30 to 7 pm, and a Live Red Carpet Arrivals show between 7 and 8 pm EST. E!, People and Entertainment Weekly will also be airing Live Red Carpet programming ahead of the actual ceremony. E! will be airing a Countdown to the Red Carpet show from 4:30 to 6 pm EST followed by a Live Red Carpet show from 6 to 8 pm EST. People and Entertainment Weekly will be jointly airing a Red Carpet Live show from 6 to 8 pm EST.
E! will also be airing an After Party show from 11 pm to 12 am EST. IMDb will also be hosting a Live After the Emmys stream on its webpage.
The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards will air live on Fox at 8 pm EST on Sept. 22. The 71st Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards will take place over two nights on Sept. 14 and 15 and a broadcast can later be viewed on FXX on Sept. 21 at 8 pm EST.
