Elysium Unveiled, Invaded in Trailer For Neill Blomkamp's New Film

Earlier this week, Columbia Pictures screened 10 minutes of footage from director Neill Blomkamp's Elysium for select journalists, but now it's your time to lay eyes on the official trailer. We've seen pictures of stars Matt Damon, Jodie Foster and Sharlto Copley, but this is the first look at them in motion -- as well as the wonderland known as Elysium.

Here's the official synopsis:

In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government offcial, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

The film was penned by Blomkamp, who also wrote and directed his breakout hit District 9. If you're interested in learning more about both the world of Elysium and the film itself, check out the movie's website ItsBetterUpThere.com. Elysium opens Aug. 9.
