Ember Lumen (Leah Lewis) and Wade Ripple (Mamoudou Athie) show off the shared beauty of their unique abilities in a new official clip from Disney and Pixar's upcoming animated feature Elemental.Disney and Pixar shared a fresh look at Elemental ahead of the film's premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival tomorrow, May 27. The clip begins with Ember, a fire elemental, demonstrating her ability to change the color of her flame body depending on what kind of mineral she's standing on. This encourages Wade to show off a trick of his own, with the water elemental skimming along a pond in order to create a similarly multicolored rainbow.RELATED: Moana: Auliʻi Cravalho Won't Reprise Her Role in the Live-Action Film

Earth, Wind, Fire and Air

This clip is indicative of the larger themes of Elemental, a film all about finding common ground despite differences. Director and co-story writer Peter Sohn partially based the film on his experiences growing up as the child of immigrants in the melting pot of New York City during the 1970s. Pixar's latest animated feature also takes inspiration from classic romance films, including the similarly-themed 1967 release Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.

Following its debut at Cannes, Elemental is scheduled to release nationwide on Friday, June 16. In addition to Lewis and Athie, the film stars the voices of Ronnie del Carmen, Shila Ommi, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Catherine O'Hara, Mason Wertheimer, Joe Pera and Matt Yang King. An official synopsis reads as follows: "Set in Element City, where fire-, water-, land- and air-residents live together, Elemental introduces Ember, a tough, quick-witted and fiery young woman, whose friendship with a fun, sappy, go-with-the-flow guy named Wade challenges her beliefs about the world they live in."

The Future of Pixar

Still, the May 27 date for the Cannes premiere seems fitting, seeing as how Elemental is Pixar's 27th feature film overall. Last year, the acclaimed studio put out two films: the Disney+-exclusive Turning Red and the theatrically-released Toy Story spinoff Lightyear. While Elemental is the only Pixar feature film scheduled for release in 2023, the studio's very first long-form television series, Win or Lose, is expected to premiere on Disney+ in December.

Meanwhile, Pixar's 28th feature, Elio, is currently scheduled for release on March 1, 2024. It will be followed by a sequel to the 2015 film Inside Out on June 14, 2024. Additionally, three currently-untitled Pixar films are scheduled for release on June 13, 2025, March 6, 2026 and June 19, 2026, respectively. A fifth main-series entry in the Toy Story saga is also in the works at the Disney-owned studio.
