The Elder Scrolls is known for hiding little Easter eggs, and Skyrim had a host of intriguing finds players could happen upon while traversing the frigid landscape. One such mystery is a headless horseman, homage to Washington Irving's Legend of Sleepy Hollow. A headless rider may be far from the most dangerous thing the Dragonborn can encounter while traveling through the night, but it certainly is one of the most intriguing.

Players can't help but wonder who the mysterious warrior is. But while there's no information that confirms his identity or sheds light on his story, the location where he can found may provide a clue as to who he is. He cannot be interacted with or fought, but the Dragonborn can track him to a specific location if they know where to travel.

If the Dragonborn encounters the headless horseman while traveling at night, they may follow him as he rides, eventually leading back to the cemetery he likely calls home. This is located on the south side of the mountain range between Whiterun and Hjaalmarch. He tends to ride quickly, and it may not be possible to keep up with him. However, those who can are invited to follow him on his nightly ride, arriving at the cemetery in Hamvir's Rest. Upon arriving, he can be heard saying, "You are not welcome here."

Following him to the cemetery may not offer much closure to his identity or purpose, but there are a few rewards to be gained. Three skeletons and a leveled draugr occupy the cemetery and need to be fought. Once those enemies have been taken care of, searching the area reveals a master-level chest, some random items and plenty of the crafting herb Nightshade to pluck. The horseman will not help in the fight and cannot be physically harmed himself, so attacking him is pointless.

If the player has already been to Hamvir's Rest or tracked the horseman to this location on his nightly ride, they can fast-travel there by day. In the daytime, he can seen lurking at the gate to the cemetery where the skeletons and draugr were encountered. He will not leave, but simply watch, only moving when the Dragonborn is no longer in his view.

He does issue a few memorable quotes while watching the Dragonborn battle with enemies. Most of them are about death and finality, suggesting whatever curse afflicts him has centered his focus on an afterlife he will never achieve himself, so instead he takes delight in watching others obtain what remains just out of reach.
