One of the most popular current shonen titles is Fire Force, from the very same creator as Soul Eater. That anime is set in a world where magic takes the form of pyrokinetics, and fire soldiers can use that power to battle demonic Infernals and battle the white-clad cult. The hero is Shinra Kusakabe, who can emit powerful flames from his feet.
Meanwhile, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a steampunk fantasy series with alchemy and homunculi, with Edward Elric as the main character. He is a trained martial artist and alchemist, and he is well-versed in science as well. If these two shonen heroes fought in a duel, who would win, and how would they achieve victory?
10 Edward: Martial Arts
Although Edward Elrid doesn't quite rank among shonen's melee masters like Son Goku or Yusuke Urameshi, he is quite an accomplished martial artist. He and his younger brother Alphonse Elric were both trained by a master, Izumi Curtis.
Now, Edward can read his opponent's moves and deliver a quick and elegant counter-attack, and he can kick, punch and grapple with just about anyone. He also uses his small size to his advantage, confusing enemies who expect an opponent closer to their own height.
9 Shinra: Wide Attacks
Shinra is a third-generation pyrokinetic, and he emits flames from his feet. And his attacks aren't exactly pinpoint surgical strikes either, contrasting with Lieutenant Hinawa's magic bullets. He can attack in a wide arc.
Shinra often sweeps his feet through the air to create arcs of flames, and his opponents have trouble evading Shinra's wide jets or trails of flame. Dodging him isn't easy, and he can launch these attacks rapidly, too, filling the battlefield with his offensive power.
8 Edward: Science
Ed looks lost in thought here. Perhaps he is thinking over a scientific paper he read, or working out the formula for a new chemical weapon. Ever since his boyhood, Edward has had a gift for science, and that makes him resourceful on the battlefield.
Edward once broke down wet dynamite to emit clouds of noxious ammonia gas into the air, overwhelming the noses of two chimeras. He also knows what elements are found in just about any object, allowing him to break them down and reshape them.
7 Shinra: Mobility
Shinra sure knows how to move around when he's fighting, and he can be a difficult target to hit for most opponents. Since his flames come from his feet, and feet are used for running and jumping, he has a natural edge in mobility.
During battle, Shinra can glide around the battlefield on his flaming feet, and he can jump and vault into the air with his soles acting like booster rockets. He never sits still for long when the enemy arrives.
6 Edward: Barriers
Edward is highly potent on the offensive, but he also knows how to protect himself. He often touches the ground with his palms, so he can create dense barriers out of stone, bricks and earth to protect himself and his allies.
Ed might do this if the enemy is launching a powerful attack, or if he didn't want to fight at all and someone is taking the fight to him. He can even create domes or boxes to trap enemies inside or protect an ally during a fight. Anything to keep his friends safe.
5 Shinra: Tora Hishigi
Shinra is a pretty quick and mobile fighter already, but he underwent some training with Captain Shinmon Benimaru alongside Arther Boyle, and he learned a few more tricks based on creating hand seals for added power.
As a result, Shinra can use a technique named Tora Hishigi, and with it, he can more acutely focus his firepower on his feet and thus increase his speed even more. Now he is a blur on the battlefield, and only the fastest opponents can hope to catch him.
4 Edward: Metal Arm And Leg
Edward lost his left leg when he and his brother tried to perform human transmutation, and he gave up his right arm to bring back Alphonse's soul. Ed has found some ways to capitalize on these metal limbs in combat.
Since Ed's arm is metal, he can block heavy enemy attacks with it and not suffer any pain or injuries, unless the arm is destroyed (and it's not easy to destroy). Ed can also use alchemy to reshape the arm and form a sharp blade on it, a knife that he'll never drop.
3 Shinra: Explosions
Shinra tends to use regular flames when he is fighting, and that's standard procedure for most fire soldiers. But some fire soldiers have found innovative ways to use their control of heat, such as Karim Flam robbing material of its heat to freeze it solid.
Meanwhile, Shinra can actually set off explosions with his feet to deal extra damage, and his recent training has allowed him to push his technique that far. If anything gets in his way, he can just blow it apart and keep coming. Katsuki Bakugo from My Hero Academia can relate to that.
2 Edward: Spikes And Towers
When fighting, Edward can use his alchemy in all sorts of ways, and not just to make barriers or modify his metal arm. He tends to create pillars with stone, concrete and bricks to attack his enemies, and he can pummel them with giant fists made from the earth itself.
He can also create rapidly-growing pillars that can lift him away from an enemy, and he can move around on these solid materials to maneuver as needed. It's not as fast as Shinra's fire jets, but it works.
1 Winner: Shinra Kusakabe
Shinra is going to get a good fight out of Edward, and he'll have to use the full extent of his ignition powers to take on this alchemist and win. Shinra can't create barriers or break down matter himself, so he'll have to stay on the offensive and destroy the barriers or pillars that Ed makes.
With his explosive kicks and overwhelming firepower, Shinra can blast his way through Ed's defenses, and his superior mobility will help him stay on the offensive. Sooner or later, Shinra will break through the last of Ed's defenses and deal heavy blows up close. Ed's martial arts skills won't save him from explosive, flaming kicks like that.
