Editor Will Dennis on "Y: The Last Man" #58

Forget the countdown to "Final Crisis," there's an even more ominous clock ticking away at DC Comics – the countdown to Vertigo's "Y: The Last Man" #60.

One of the most high profile creator-owned series in comics, "Y" concludes in December, wrapping up five years of post-apocalyptic horror, sci-fi sex and gender politics, and innumerable cringe-worthy one-liners courtesy of creators Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra. Issue #58 hits stands tomorrow, continuing the "Whys and Wherefores" storyline, and promises to feature what might be the hugest revelation yet. CBR News tracked down series editor Will Dennis and tried to find out what fans can look forward to in the next issue of one of the best reviewed and most beloved comics of the 21st century.

I'm told "Y: The Last Man" #58 ends with something of a major cliffhanger, to say the least.

It ends in tears.

As the series has been coming to a close, many of the subplots have been wrapped up - except, notably, that of Israeli commando Alter Tse'elon and her motivations. How much of the final storyline will focus on her?

Alter is definitely a major factor in the ending of this series - we've seen some of what motivates her up until now, but readers will definitely get the full picture by the end of #59 and it's not as clear cut as you might imagine.

Beth #1 and Yorick had a big, big heart-to-heart in the last issue, but it's still unresolved in some fashion - how will this be addressed?

There's this awesome scene where Yorick's at the airport and Beth's begging to stay with him and he tells her that if she dosen't go that she's going to regret it for...err...

No, actually Yorick's standing outside Beth's house and he's holding up this boom box that's playing a Peter Gabriel song and...err...that's not exactly it either.

Truthfully, Yorick and Beth are sitting in the snow and Beth says "What do we do now?" and Yorick says: "Why don't we just wait here for a little while... see what happens..."

Yeah, that's the one.

Many scenes in "Y The Last Man" are obviously meta-textual. Most recently, there was a reference by Yorick that seemed to refer to the answers to why he survived the Plague not being particularly satisfying - something some readers have expressed similar frustration with as well.  Will the Plague be explored further in these final issues, or has that been put to bed?

It's been pretty much wrapped up. I think that readers are still reading because they love these characters and want to see what happens to them. Does it really matter anymore what caused it all? Would any answer every be satisfying enough? I doubt it. BKV is just focused on bringing the story of these characters to a close.

As you bring "Y" to a close, has there been any discussion of doing an expanded final issue or anything of that sort to give Vaughan and Guerra more time to wrap things up, or have they got this nicely mapped out?

There are definitely plans for something special in the last issue. BKV has it mapped out down to the orange roof on Howard Johnson's outhouse.

If you had to sum up "Y: The Last Man" #58 in one sentence?

Bring tissues.
