Shrek star Eddie Murphy would play Donkey again in a heartbeat.

While speaking to eTalk, Murphy expressed interest in returning for a fifth installment in the Shrek franchise. "Oh, I'd absolutely be open," said the Beverly Hills Cop actor. "If they ever came to me with another Shrek I'd do it in two seconds. I love Donkey." The last project Murphy voiced the comedic character was for the 2010 film Shrek Forever After.

DreamWorks recently expanded the Shrek universe with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish for the first time in over a decade, which saw Antonio Banderas reprise his role as the titular character. Banderas first voiced Puss in Boots in 2004's Shrek 2.

Based on William Steig's 1990 children's picture book Shrek, 2001's Shrek follows the titular ogre (Mike Myers) living in the solitude of his swamp. Along with Murphy as Shrek's chatterbox sidekick Donkey, the cast featured John Lithgow as Lord Farquuad and Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona. DreamWorks' 2001 film launched a franchise that consisted of 2004's Shrek 2, 2007's Shrek the Third and the fourth installment in 2010, Shrek Forever After. Spinoffs for the franchise, however, included a variety of Puss in Boots films, including 2011's Puss in Boots, Puss in Boots: The Three Diablos in 2012 and, over a decade later, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which released in 2022.

Will There Be a Shrek 5?

In a December 2022 interview, Banderas shared his belief that it was only a matter of time before a fifth Shrek film was made. "I've been with this cat for almost 20 years," said Banderas. "The first time I did Puss In Boots, I was working on Broadway, so I did my first session there. I've done five movies now. There is probably gonna be another, and Shrek is probably coming back." Initially set for release in 2019 after its announcement three years before, radio silence has since surrounded a fifth Shrek film.

Released in 2022 as a sequel to the 2011 spin-off film Puss in Boots, The Last Wish follows the feline protagonist after discovering he has used eight of his nine lives. To rekindle his love of adventure, Puss in Boots must retrieve The Last Wish to restore his nine lives. In addition to Banderas, the 2022 movie stars Salma Hayek as Kitty Softpaws, Florence Pugh as Goldilocks, Olivia Colman as Mama Bear and John Mulaney as "Big" Jack Horner.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is now playing in theaters.
