Mark Molloy directs the sequel, his first feature film, with a script by Will Beall, known for his work on Aquaman and Zack Snyder's Justice League. Initially, Beverly Hills Cop 4 tapped Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah of Ms. Marvel fame to direct, though the duo left the project to take the reins on the ill-fated Batgirl film with DC. Jerry Bruckheimer, Chad Oman and Melissa Reid will produce the film under the former's production company with Murphy, with Charisse Hewitt-Webster and Ray Angelic serving as executive producers.

The Netflix film recently announced the addition of new actors to the franchise, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Taylour Paige, in undisclosed roles. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley is currently in production following a long development phase, with the film briefly taken off Paramount's schedule in 2016. In November 2021, Beverly Hills Cop announced the fourth film would head to Netflix following its lengthy development with a one-time licensing deal between Paramount and the streaming service. At that time, only Murphy and producer Bruckheimer were attached to the film.

Murphy reprises his role as Detroit cop Axel Foley, who visits Beverly Hills in the first film to solve the murder of his childhood friend. Sergeant John Taggart (Ashton) and Detective Billy Rosewood (Reinhold) follow Axel around town on the orders of Lieutenant Andrew Bogomil. Pinchot played art gallery salesman Serge, taking on a significant role in the third film due to immense popularity among fans. The first film, released in 1984, became the highest-grossing movie of the year. Its sequels, Beverly Hills Cop II (1987) and Beverly Hills Cop III (1994), fared less well but remained popular.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley follows an attempted television reboot of the series in 2012, which never made it to air. Sony television reportedly tried to shop the show around, but it did not land a home elsewhere. The fourth film currently has no expected release window.
