The Last Transmutation will serve as the finale to the live-action Fullmetal Alchemist film series, which began in 2017 and continued with The Vengeance of Scar, which premiered in Japan on May 20. The final film is scheduled to be released in Japan on June 24. An international release for the second and third entries in the trilogy have yet to be announced. The first film was distributed in the United States as a Netflix streaming exclusive.

Fullmetal Alchemist was created by Hiromu Arakawa and was one of the most popular and acclaimed titles of the early 2000s. In addition to the new live-action movies, the manga was adapted into animation twice; the first show premiered in 2003 and diverges wildly from the source material, while 2009's Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood was created to be a more direct adaptation of Arakawa's original work.

Both shows are now streaming on Hulu and Crunchyroll, while Arakawa's manga is available in English from VIZ Media and Yen Press.
