If a new rumor is to be believed, Daredevil's role in Marvel Studios' upcoming Disney+ series Echo could be limited to a single-episode cameo.Last summer, it came to light that Echo -- a spinoff of Hawkeye -- would see Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio reprise their Marvel Cinematic Universe roles as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, respectively. According to Marvel scooper CanWeGetSomeToast, Daredevil's appearance in Echo will come in the form of a cameo in Episode 2. (The extent of Kingpin's role in the series is still unknown.) That said, it was also recently rumored that Echo would directly acknowledge the events of the Netflix series Marvel's Daredevil, thus cementing the show as MCU canon. Echo itself is slated to premiere on Disney+ later this year on Nov. 29, with all episodes of the series dropping at once. This marks a departure from Marvel Studios' previous Disney+ shows, which have utilized weekly rollouts.RELATED: Loki Season 2 Finally Scores an Official Release Date

Daredevil's Return to the MCU

Cox's Daredevil and D'Onofrio's Kingpin originally appeared in Netflix's aforementioned MCU-adjacent series Daredevil, which ran for three seasons from 2015 to 2018. (Daredevil also appeared in Netflix's 2017 crossover limited series Marvel's The Defenders.) After the show's cancellation, Cox eventually reprised his role as Matt Murdock in the late-2021 MCU film Spider-Man: No Way Home. Around that same time, D'Onofrio reprised his role as Wilson Fisk in the Disney+ series Hawkeye. In the show's final episodes, the Kingpin of Crime was revealed to be the adoptive "uncle" of Maya Lopez/Echo, played by Alaqua Cox (no relation to Charlie).

With that in mind, it's unsurprising that D'Onofrio's Kingpin would return for Echo's spinoff series. It's also unsurprising that Charlie Cox would appear as Daredevil in the series, given the fact that the character of Echo actually originates from the Daredevil comic books. Maya Lopez was created by David Mack and Joe Quesada, first appearing in 1999's Daredevil #9. While Daredevil's role in Echo's live-action solo series may be limited, MCU fans can expect to see a lot more of the Man Without Fear next year.

The Marvel Studios series Daredevil: Born Again is currently slated to premiere on Disney+ in spring 2024 as part of Phase Five of the MCU. Born Again will be led by Cox and D'Onofrio, with the two once again playing Daredevil and Kingpin, respectively. The show's first season will run for 18 episodes. In the meantime, Cox recently suited up as Daredevil for the first time since 2018, playing the Man Without Fear in the 2022 Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. (He only appeared as Matt Murdock in No Way Home). To that end, the meta MCU series gave Cox's Daredevil a spiffy new yellow suit inspired by his original comic book design from the 1960s.
