Jody Hill broke onto the scene with 2006’s The Foot Fist Way starring his friend Danny McBride, and followed that with the 2009 dark-mall cop comedy Observe and Report, with Seth Rogen. The director teamed up again with McBride for the recently wrapped HBO series Eastbound & Down.
What’s next? According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hill is attached to write and direct a film about a pair of outlaws running wild in the South circa 1970 for Warner Bros. Sound like a familiar premise? Well, rumor has it that the film might wind up being a reboot of the Dukes of Hazzard franchise. Apparently the decision to call the film The Dukes of Hazzard will be made once Hill finishes the script.
The Dukes of Hazzard aired on CBS from 1979 and 1985, and focused on the raucus adventures of cousins Bo and Luke Duke, played by Tom Wopat and John Schneider. The property was revived on the big screen by Warner Bros. in 2005 with stars Sean William Scott and Johnny Knoxville.
The trade paper notes that Hill wanted to make a movie set in a similar time period, but more in the vein of Sam Peckinpah flicks like The Getaway. So, it sounds like, if the new movie does wind up being a Dukes vehicle, it might take a kind of Batman Begins look at the whole concept.
