The following contains spoilers for Earth-Prime #2, on sale now from DC Comics.

One of the most intriguing things about the Superman & Lois television series thus far has been the way Tyler Hoechlin's Clark has been able to overcome most of the hurdles he has faced in his heroic career. Whether it be General Sam Lane and the military, his sinister half-brother Tal-Rho, or even Steel, Kal-El has found a way to capture his enemies or let those who misunderstood him know he's not on Earth to cause trouble.

Interestingly, DC's Earth-Prime #2 details more backstory about Kal's history before the TV show and has addressed what force fashioned itself as Superman's greatest enemy, and as Clark confirmed in flashbacks to his twins Jon and Jordan, it's actually the concept of time.

In "The Anniversary" (by Jai Jamison, Adam Mallinger, Andrew N. Wong, Tom Grummett, Norm Rapmund, Hi-Fi and Tom Napolitano), Clark regaled the boys with the story of how he struggled to keep his promise to Lois on their first wedding anniversary. He booked them a fancy dinner, but was called away to deal with the threat of the Toyman. This was followed up days later with a confrontation with Nuclear Man, as well as the arrival of Lobo. Unfortunately, Lois was similarly distracted by her journalism career, notably having to tend to Perry White's failed printing press on their special night together.

These occurrences led the couple to admit that perhaps having planned dates would not work for them. Interestingly, this issue has been addressed several times in other comics, as well as cartoons, television shows, and movies. Clark, however, stepped up the challenge by flying them to Hawaii during a small window of time, creating a tradition for the couple that even their sons found impressive.

Although this was a very romantic and thoughtful gesture, it also foreshadowed the maritial problems the Kents have experienced over the course of the television show. Clark and Lois have had repeated arguments regarding how to best split their time between work and home life, with both being highly devoted to their respective careers.

This led to Clark taking on a role as a football coach at the high school his sons attended during the time that Jordan's powers were awakening. In addition to wanting to keep a closer eye on the situation at this critical time, he also wanted to take better control of his personal life.

Clark Kent has clearly demonstrated in this series that allocating proper time and attention to his family has been a challenge when coupled with the responsibilities that accompany his chosen profession. This has crafted a much more realistic story that many couples can relate to, and also demonstrated the resolve of the Kent family to overcome their true greatest enemy: time.
