Dynamite’s “Red Sonja” #0 Clocks In With Over 200,000+ Copies

March 14, 2005, Runnemede, NJ — She lived in a savage world in an uncivilized age – a world ruled by men and governed by the sword. They called her Red Sonja – for her flame-red hair, and for the smoldering fire of her pride, which gave her sword-arm a strength that few men could match, and none had ever defeated.

This is the story of Red Sonja, as told by Dynamite Entertainment co-writers Michael (Thor) Avon Oeming and Mike (Ultimate Elektra, Lucifer) Carey, artists Mel Rubi, Richard (Origin) Isanove, Caesar (Sojourn) Rodriguez, cover artist Greg (Phoenix: Endsong) Land and a host of talented cover artists to come!

Now, Dynamite can claim the top advance sales spot for the month, moving over 200,000 units of the introductory .25c issue. This is history in the making!

Dynamite would like to say thank you! Thank you to the retailers who supported the book with their initial orders and thank you to the fans who asked the retailers to reserve a copy! And yes, there will be those who note that the book is only a quarter, but it took retailers to have faith in the execution of the “ultimate” Red Sonja, by the all-star creators involved, for them to carry this many copies.

It is truly an achievement, especially considering the competition for April sales and all the choices that retailers had. Dynamite was fortunate enough to reach levels that have remained untouched in over 10 years — Red Sonja #0 is the first non-Marvel/non-DC comic to achieve over 200,000 in initial sales. Again, WOW! And thanks!

When news of the incredibly strong sales for Sonja’s debut reached Dynamite, the reaction, was, uh, quite ecstatic from some corners:

Mel Rubi: ” OH YEAH, THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKIN’ ‘BOUT… DYN-O-MITE! ”

[Dynamite Spokesperson] J. Allen: “Who-Hoo! They like us, THEY REALLY LIKE US! But seriously, Wow! We had hoped that if we put great creators on a great character, that retailers and fans would support us, but to do this well… it’s incredible. Again, thank you to the retailers who supported us, thank you to the fans who asked for Red Sonja, and thank you to the creative talent who helped launch Red Sonja in to the new millennium. We could not have done any of this without all of you!”

While Dignified and Restrained in others:

Mike Carey: “Well this just says it all. Everyone who’s involved in this project is loving it and giving it all they’ve got – that’s why it’s got this runaway train momentum…”

Michael Avon Oeming: “I cant express what a great time writing Red Sonja has been- working with Mel Rubi and Mike Carey has been an amazing experience and any success the book has will just be icing on the cake.”

And again, in addition to tremendous retailer response, Dynamite Entertainment’s Red Sonja has also had a positive outcry from fans (again, we appreciate all the nice words – as do Michael Avon Oeming, Mike Carey, Mel Rubi, Richard Isanove and Caesar Rodriguez – Thank you all very much!). The most incredible part of this is that the She Devil with a Sword has gotten the majority of her attention from the comic news internet community along with Comic Shop News and Wizard Magazine. We would especially like to thank everyone who covered us on the ‘net and Comic Shop News, (who gave us a cover feature) AS WELL AS extensive coverage from Newsarama, The Pulse, Comic Book Resources, Scoop, Comics Continuum, ICV2 and Silver Bullet Comic Books! Again, we thank you all and sorry if we missed anyone!

While Red Sonja #0 will not officially sit atop the released sales charts compiled by Diamond Comics due to its “introductory” cover price, rest assured that Red Sonja #0 is THE strongest debut from any publisher in 2005. Here’s looking at Red Sonja #1!

As a final note, Dynamite will be insuring retailer sell through and offering two versions of the Greg Land cover – shipping in a 50/50 ration – one with a black background and the other with a white background.
