Rumors that former Teen Wolf star Dylan O'Brien had been offered the lead role in DC Films' NIghtwing movie circulated online earlier this year before, seemingly, sputtering out. And no one is happier about that than O'Brien himself.

While promoting his latest project, Not Okay, a comedy drama about the perils of influencer and internet fame, O'Brien put that Dick Grayson nonsense to rest. Or at least he hopes he did.

"No, no, never, never [any truth to the Nightwing rumors]," he told Screen Rant. "I'm glad that time has passed and people can see that I was telling the truth. There was so much doubt and speculation and theories and all just from, I don't even know who originally put... I think that they just post shit. They have no source. It doesn't come from anything."

What may have begun as little more than fancasting received a boost in January from the Twitter account Big Screen Leaks, which wrote, "I know he was definitely approached about the role. Not sure if anything was made official though." That was enough to move the O'Brien/Nightwing chatter from mere rumor to "report" as the story gained traction online.

Even Dylan O'Brien Wondered If the Nightwing Rumors Were True

O'Brien responded in March to at least the fancasting aspect of the Nightwing chatter, saying, "I'm aware of it, I've seen a lot of it. I've not heard anything about it on the professional side, but it's cool that it made its way to me, to the point where I asked my manager 'Is this even an actual thing?'"

It wasn't, but the ubiquity of the rumor was enough to cause even O'Brien to have doubts. "It's so funny whenever I see these, rumors like this have ever popped up, I even start thinking, I'm like, 'Am I just missing emails or something?' Like, what's going on, you know?" O'Brien said in March. "Yeah, it's not true. I haven't heard it. I think it's always so funny to report back to fans or speculation that there's zero truth to it, because it's really, like, underwhelming."

Speaking to Screen Rant, O'Brien saw similarities between the Nightwing rumors and the plot of Not Okay.

"It's crazy actually to see it catch fire. That's not really fair, is it?" he said. "It is [like the message of Not Okay]. Yeah. I mean, it was like an account that has a following. It's somewhat of a credible source, and they're just making shit up. That’s interesting, isn't it?"

Talk of Nightwing surfaced in early 2017, with The LEGO Batman Movie director Chris McKay behind the camera. Following months of updates, and assurances, from McKay on social media, Nightwing was left in limbo in early 2019, amid Warner Bros.' reshuffling of its DC movies slate.
