Development for Black Adam began in 2014, when Johnson was originally cast. The character was intended to appear in 2017's Shazam!, but narrative changes were made.

The film will reportedly serve as a prequel to Shazam!. It was originally scheduled to begin filming in 2019, but was forced to delay due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Johnson recently revealed that filming for the long-awaited film would begin in several weeks. It was previously reported that principal photography was scheduled to begin in April.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, Black Adam stars Dwayne Johnson, Noah Centineo, Aldis Hodge, Quintessa Swindell, Pierce Brosnan, Marwan Kenzari and Sarah Shahi. The film has yet to receive a release date.
