Dwayne Johnson is spilling the details about how he made Black Adam's big cameo a reality.
During a chat with Collider, Johnson was asked about how he went about organizing Henry Cavill's return as Superman. The actor revealed that it was all about giving the fans what they wanted, but it was no easy task. "It got to a point where collectively, I want to say myself, Dany and Hiram (Garcia), we said, 'Here's how the movie should end. And I'll give you one further, test it, and if it doesn't work, we'll never talk about it again. Test it,'" Johnson explained. "We shot it, to their credit, new leadership. They saw it and said, 'We don't even have to test it.'"
After the animated credits come to a close, Black Adam (Johnson) is encountered by a drone from Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) who tells him she won't interfere with his business if he stays in his country of Kahndaq. When he dares her to try and stop him because no one can match his power, Waller tells him she has allies "from other planets" that can keep him in line. After destroying the drone with a lightning bolt, a figure in the shadows descends from the sky. Once the light hits his face, it's revealed to be Henry Cavill's Superman, who says that the two of them should have a conversation before the scene ends.
Cavill first donned Superman's cape in 2013's Man of Steel. The actor would go on to reprise the role in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and 2017's Justice League. While the 2017 film was his last official theatrical appearance as the character, the movie was re-released on HBO Max as Zack Snyder's Justice League. The release served as Snyder's director's cut of the film after he left the original project due to personal matters in the middle of production.
Johnson has been teasing Cavill's return during the film's press run since San Diego Comic-Con 2022. At the time he said, "I will say, as you guys know, we're all in deep in this mythology, and it's been the age-old question of who would win in a fight between Black Adam or Superman? Pound for pound, they're pretty close. I guess it probably all depends on who's playing Superman. I'll just say that. I'll leave it at that."
The actor got even more pointed about a Cavill Man of Steel appearance in an Instagram post where he said, "I just saw the movie again last night. I can't wait for you guys to see Black Adam…He is the most powerful and unstoppable force on this planet." After stating "On this planet," Johnson gave a wink to the camera which made fans truly believe that Cavill was reprising the role.
Black Adam is now in theaters.
