Fast & Furious 7 might be losing more key players than just longtime franchise director Justin Lin.
Dwayne Johnson, who joined the cast as officer Luke Hobbs with 2011’s Fast Five, may not return for the seventh installment. The actor, whose next film Pain & Gain debuts April 26, explained to Collider that scheduling conflicts would prevent him from appearing in Fast & Furious 7 if that film starts shooting this summer.
“It’s not possible for me because I’m shooting Hercules this summer starting in 6 weeks in Budapest, so, possible for them I’m not too sure,” Johnson said. “I haven’t heard anything about that and I’m pretty sure I would have gotten a phone call pretty early in the morning if that was the real plan. Not quite too sure though.”
Lin announced recently that he wouldn’t return for the next film, prompting Universal Pictures to court James Wan (Insidious). Screenwriter Chris Morgan, who wrote the majority of the Fast and the Furious films, will be back.
Meanwhile, there’s still the matter of Fast & Furious 6, which hits theaters next month. In the wind-up to the premiere, Universal has released more posters on the movie’s Facebook page:
Here’s the official synopsis for Fast & Furious 6:
Since Dom (Vin Diesel) and Brian’s (Paul Walker) Rio heist toppled a kingpin’s empire and left their crew with $100 million, our heroes have scattered across the globe. But their inability to return home and living forever on the lam have left their lives incomplete.
Meanwhile, Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) has been tracking an organization of lethally skilled mercenary drivers across 12 countries, whose mastermind (Luke Evans) is aided by a ruthless second-in-command revealed to be the love Dom thought was dead, Letty (Michelle Rodriguez). The only way to stop the criminal outfit is to outmatch them at street level, so Hobbs asks Dom to assemble his elite team in London. Payment? Full pardons for all of them so they can return home and make their families whole again.
Fast & Furious 6 opens May 24.
