Dwayne Johnson has explained why he didn't like his original costume for the upcoming Black Adam movie.

In an interview with Total Film magazine, Johnson revealed his feelings on the early costume and how the problem was fixed. "These are the best costume-makers in the business, who have done all the most amazing costumes," Johnson said. "They’re so talented. They come over to the house. I put it on. And I fucking hate this costume. Everything was padded. So they immediately start tearing and cutting and ripping. When I put that costume on the second time with no padding, just cut in a way where it was enhancing the work that I had put in – I felt... I’m Black Adam."

From there, Johnson explained that, for Black Adam, he's gotten into "the best shape of [his] career." He then addressed the original costume again, saying, "The easy version was I just continued on the same training regimen, not push myself, and find a Black Adam costume that covered my body up with some padded muscles in certain places, and no one will ever know. But I prefer to go the opposite way, and really come in in phenomenal shape and redesign a costume where I didn’t need padding."

Originally known as a professional wrestler in the WWF/WWE, Johnson has turned into one of the biggest film stars in the industry today, having starred in such franchises as the Fast & Furious and Jumanji. His official entrance into the superhero genre has been a long-time coming. After tentative plans for him to play Lobo fell through, Johnson confirmed himself as playing Black Adam in Shazam! Eventually, though, plans for Shazam! changed and Warner Bros. greenlit a solo Black Adam film starring the actor.

Black Adam sees the titular character awakening after 5,000 years of imprisonment and interacting with the Justice Society of America (JSA), which consists of Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo), Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell) and Kent Nelson/Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan). Black Adam's love interest from the comics, Adrianna Tomaz/Isis (Sarah Shahi), will also appear.

While the tone of the DCEU has noticeably lightened in recent years, Black Adam looks to be one of the darker installments in the shared universe. Despite a PG-13 rating, producers have claimed the Black Adam will have a "very high kill count." Johnson has also repeatedly boasted that his version of Black Adam will be able to stand toe-to-toe with the DCEU's heaviest hitters, including Superman.

Created by Otto Binder and C.C. Beck, Black Adam first appeared in 1945's The Marvel Family #1, where he served as Captain Marvel's most dangerous enemy. In the comics, Black Adam gets his Shazam-like powers from Egyptian deities, including Horus, Amon and Shu. Over the years, there have been a lot of changes to the property -- including Captain Marvel's name changing to Shazam. This has also meant a number of big changes for Black Adam, who in the DC Universe has morphed into something of an antihero.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra from a script by Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani, Black Adam releases July 29, 2022.
