Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson has announced that filming has started on his next blockbuster project, Red One.
"It’s beginning to look a lot like CHRISTMAAAS. Officially kicking off production for our CHRISTMAS franchise film titled, [Red One] with my guy [Chris Evans]," Johnson wrote on Instagram. He also shared a first look image of the two actors in character on the film's set. While it is unknown at this time who Johnson is playing in Red One, many have already pointed out online that his costume is giving off Deadpool vibes.
Red One was first announced in June 2021. Jake Kasdan will direct the globe-trotting, action-adventure comedy film after having previously directed The Rock in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Jumanji: The Next Level. Chris Morgan penned the screenplay for Red One based on an idea from Seven Bucks Productions' Hiram Garcia.
"Red One is incredibly special to me and a story I’ve wanted to tell for years," Garcia said back in 2021. "An epic, edge-of-your-seat, action-adventure that takes beloved holiday mythology and turns it on its head. I’m thrilled to have our Seven Bucks team join forces with Amazon to bring this fun Holiday tale to life for a global audience."
From Superman to Santa Claus
Johnson can currently be seen in theaters as the title character in DC Studios' Black Adam, the latest installment in the DC Universe. The film follows the powerful anti-hero as he is unleashed into the modern world 5,000 years after being bestowed the powers of the gods. Although he comes into conflict with the heroic superhero team, the Justice Society, he reluctantly agrees to team up with the superheroes to stop a force more powerful than Adam himself that threatens to destroy the world. At the time of writing, Black Adam has made over $300 million at the worldwide box office, with fans praising the visual effects and the film's post-credits scene featuring the return of Henry Cavill's Superman.
Joining Johnson and Evans in Red One are Lucy Liu (Elementary), Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Kristofer Hivju (Game of Thrones), Nick Kroll (Big Mouth), Mary Elizabeth Ellis (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Wesley Kimmel (The Book of Boba Fett), J.K. Simmons (Spider-Man: No Way Home) and Bonnie Hunt (Cheaper by the Dozen), with the latter two portraying Santa and Mrs. Claus, respectively.
Red One does not yet have a release date but will release exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in late 2023.
