Dwayne Johnson shared the first photo of his character from the upcoming Black Adam film.

The black-and-white photo, which Johnson posted to his Instagram, shows the titular character shrouded in rags, but his face and boots can be seen within the moody silhouette; Johnson's caption matches the photo's tone. "If you know the comic book mythology, then you know where his pain comes from," the actor wrote. "His rage. His wife and children killed. His people brutally enslaved. He is not a superhero, but rather a champion. Champion of the poor and beaten down. Champion of the people. And he is the most unstoppable force in the DC UNIVERSE."

"[...] wanted to give you guys a little [Black Adam] update and share this image with you from set," Johnson said. "Production is coming along GREAT and I'm very pleased with the movie we're making. Black Adam's mythology, ethics and actions no doubt will create a new paradigm in the world of superheroes, villains & antiheroes." Johnson concluded the post by saying, "The power will shift. The line will blur. From a slave to a God."

Johnson, who will portray the anti-hero in the DC film, has been posting periodic updates from the set. The most recent photo, also posted to the actor's Instagram, was of a soundstage filled with rubble, which Johnson posted to show the film's "massive production efforts and scale." He also revealed that production had reached its midway point after filming officially began in April 2021.

The star had also recently teased a partial look at Black Adam's costume with two photos from a recent ZOA Energy board meeting. While one photo featured Johnson in a black cover-up, the second offered a glimpse at the costume's golden lightning bolt. Beyond that, the closest look that fans have gotten of the antihero's costume was concept art released during DC Fandome in Aug. 2020.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, Black Adam stars Dwayne Johnson, Noah Centineo, Aldis Hodge, Quintessa Swindell, Pierce Brosnan, Marwan Kenzari, Sarah Shahi, James Cusati-Moyer and Bodhi Sabongui. The film arrives in theaters July 29, 2022.
