Chris Pine will be jumping from sci-fi and superheroes to fantasy, starring in Paramount and Hasbro's upcoming Dungeons & Dragons movie.

The long-in-development adaptation of the hit roleplaying game will feature Pine in the lead, The Hollywood Reporter revealed. The film will be directed and written by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, best known for directing Game Night and writing Spider-Man: Homecoming. No other plot details are known at this time.

Pine's profile has been raised considerably over the years, working in genre films like the new Star Trek franchise and DC's Wonder Woman series as well as more dramatic roles. His name and familiarity with action fare presumably helped him land the lead in what Paramount and Hasbro/eOne hope will be an epic new franchise. Pine will next appear in Wonder Woman 1984 and is currently filming Olivia Wilde's Don't Worry Darling, a '50s-set thriller co-starring Wilde, Nick Kroll and Black Widow's Florence Pugh.

The popular RPG, which has captivated players for decades, has had a long journey to the screen a second time after 2000's Dungeons & Dragons from New Line failed to impress audiences and critics alike. Back in 2015, Warner Bros. secured the film rights and announced a move towards adapting the game, with Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver) expected to star. That ultimately fell through, with Paramount scooping up the rights thanks to their production deal with Hasbro.

The new film will be directed by Goldstein and Daley, who took over scriptwriting duties from Michael Gilio. They'll be joined by former Marvel producer Jeremy Latcham, who left the MCU for eOne, Hasbro's media entertainment arm. Latcham previously worked with the directors as a producer on Spider-Man: Homecoming. He also produced The AvengersGuardians of the Galaxy and Age of Ultron for Marvel Studios, along with Bad Times at the El Royale, starring Thor's Chris Hemsworth.

Though the release dates for the films have since been pushed back, Dungeons & Dragons joins other previously announced Hasbro movies Micronauts and Snake Eyes, the G.I. spinoff that was initially set to arrive this year. Hasbro also has an untitled event film on the docket, though details on the project remain unknown.

Directed and written by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, Dungeons & Dragons stars Chris Pine and is slated for release on May 27, 2022.
