One of the more popular isekai anime out there is Konosuba, which is sitting on two seasons and a movie. Diehard fans can also get their hands on the original light novels and manga, to follow the wacky and hilarious adventures of Kazuma, Aqua, Megumin, Darkness, and the others.

What kind of characters are they, anyway? How do you categorize a fictional character? One popular method, aside from the MBTI® types, is to use the moral alignment chart of the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop game, which is based on a 3x3 grid. One axis measures good, neutral, and evil, and the other measures lawful, neutral, and chaotic (neutral-neutral is known as "true neutral"). So, when you apply this chart to the lovable Konosuba characters, what kind of results will you get? Let's find out.

10 Kazuma Sato: Neutral Evil

Don't be fooled by the "evil" part of Kazuma's alignment. An evil character doesn't have to be a devil or a necromancer or a deranged serial killer. In fact, evil can take many forms. The basis of evil is harming others to pursue selfish interests.

Kazuma fits this role. He's a total sleaze who will take any chance to get rich quick, and he's usually not first in line to save people just for its own sake. He's also reluctant to help others, even Aqua, and he resents his role as "hero." After all, the "protagonist" isn't a synonym for "good guy."

9 Aqua: Chaotic Neutral

Aqua is not a mortal woman; in fact, she is a goddess, and there's an entire church built around worshiping her, and her followers are total fanatics (to Kazuma's intense distaste). Aqua isn't too bright, though, and she got tricked into joining Kazuma on his quest.

Overall, Aqua means well, but only barely. More often, she acts in self-interest in terms of food, drink, and glory. The only real differences between her and Kazuma are that she's even worse at planning, and she doesn't exploit or mistreat others as often (though it's still not totally beneath her).

8 Megumin: Chaotic Neutral

Megumin gives a thumbs up in KonoSuba.

The explosion-loving little witch shares an alignment with Aqua, even if their personalities and magic styles are somewhat different. Young Megumin hails from the Crimson Demon clan, hence her red eyes and aptitude for magic.

Megumin is a talented kid, but she has a laser-narrow interest in explosion magic, and she will practice it anywhere, no matter who gets in her way. She doesn't often bully others, but then again, she's not very cooperative either, and she loves to tease her friend Yunyun.

7 Darkness: Chaotic Good

This crusader was born into the wealthy and noble Dustiness family, but she couldn't stand that stifling life, and ran off to find her own destiny. She found it... badly. Darkness has a heart of gold and acts as the moral compass for Kazuma's group, but she's an odd one.

She will chafe against anyone who tries to control her destiny, often to a hilarious extent, and she has masochistic tendencies and the horrifying ambition to marry an abusive drunkard husband someday. On the battlefield, though, she will bravely stand up to evil as duty calls, even if her sword skills are bottom-tier.

6 Vanir: Neutral Evil

Vanir is one of the devil king's top-ranking officials, though he has largely carved his own path and now wants to exploit any adventurer he comes across. Vanir isn't a monster, necessarily, but his personality and method are less than savory.

He set up a dungeon that looked inviting to adventurers, and he will lure them in with the promise of riches... only to give them a note saying "haha, fooled you!" He also tangled with Kazuma's party, and he's a bit of a disagreeable fellow if anyone contradicts him.

5 Eris: Lawful Good

Next up is Eris, a goddess of the magical world and Aqua's junior goddess. She is a model diety and wants what is best for everyone, and she does things by the book. As a bonus, she enjoys a large following among the humans, being worshiped wide and far.

She is prone to mishaps and gets embarrassed often, though, and she butts heads with Aqua (or rather, Aqua bullies her). According to Aqua, Eris is also a bit vain, using padding on her chest. Still, her personality is much more agreeable than Aqua's.

4 Wiz: Lawful Good

konosuba wiz

Like Vanir, Wiz once parted ways with the devil king, and she now lives independently. A powerful lich who wields ice and life-drain magic, she is also a capable caster of barriers. Fortunately, she uses these skills to help people, not harm them.

Wiz, in fact, has a non-aggression pact with the devil king, so long as the king's forces do not harm civilians. Wiz runs her own magic shop, and it's a nice place to visit. Unfortunately for Wiz, business isn't usually so good.

3 Yunyun: Chaotic Neutral

yunyun konosuba

Here is another Crimson Demon, and she is at once similar to Megumin and at the same time, a totally different person. She can also wield powerful magic in battle, but her skill set is more flexible than Megumin's.

She formed a rivalry with Megumin just to get a solid friendship going, and she's pretty timid most of the time unless there is a competition going on. She also appeared in the Konosuba movie, where she helped lead the defense of her home. Overall, she's not really virtuous or wicked; she just wants to have a good time.

2 Verdia: Lawful Evil

This is the headless horseman, and he is a powerful member of the devil king's army. He's not a berserker, though; for the most part, he likes to stay in his castle. He only entered the field of battle because Megumin kept hitting his castle with daily explosions (she incorrectly thought it was abandoned).

Verdia is a disciplined and somewhat chivalrous fighter, though he's also completely willing to curse his enemies and inflict an early death on them. Dark stuff for sure. Fortunately, he was defeated in battle, so he's one less headache for Kazuma's group.

1 Hans: Neutral Evil

Meet Hans, another high-ranking member of the devil king's army. So, what can he do? He is a man of acidic slime, and he once tried to destroy the hot springs near the town where Aqua enjoys a lot of worship.

He's tough in a fight, too, being a massive slime creature with a deadly touch. It took many characters acting in concert to take him down, and he is totally a villain, through and through. He does what he wants, and he cares not one whit who suffers for it.
