Dungeons & Dragons is becoming increasingly more accessible to a wider audience with every passing year. Not only is it incredibly fun to take part in, but it also makes for entertaining content to watch and consume. 2022 has brought an animated adaptation of Critical Role's campaign The Legend Of Vox Machina, and now there is a trailer out for a 2023 movie titled Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

Casual viewers will be well aware of the stacked cast that this movie will have, from Chris Pine and Justice Smith to Hugh Grant and Michelle Rodriguez. Yet D&D fans will be most eager to see what concepts and more importantly what monsters will be integrated into this story. With countless monsters to choose from, there are a select few featured in the trailer, with many more likely to follow.

8 A Black Dragon Will Be Wreaking Havoc From Above

The first monster to appear in the Honor Among Thieves trailer is a black dragon. It is by no means the only dragon on display, but it looks like it could be the most destructive. D&D dragons are capable of so much more than just breathing fire, and the black dragon is a prime example of this. They are known to spew an acidic spray, and the trailer shows this in a black sludge-like form.

Black dragons are a chaotic evil chromatic species with a taste for destruction. Expect the black dragon to wreak havoc on its foes in a display that will be refreshing compared to more traditional dragon appearances.

7 A Giant Spider Is Shown Lurking In The Forest

It only appears in a fleeting moment of the trailer, but as the D&D party travels through a forest, there is a giant spider climbing a nearby tree. It remains to be seen whether this will be used for more than just completing the D&D aesthetic, and what variant it may actually be.

This giant spider's inclusion could well be a hint to there being an even larger spider to threaten the main group. There are a ton of different giant spiders in D&D, including the magic-infused phase spider.

6 The Druid Will Be Causing Mayhem As An Owlbear

Having a druid on the team brings the possibility of interacting with nature. They can use nature as a tool in battle or they can bring the fight themselves with a creative change into an animal form. Sophia Lillis will play the druid in question, named Doric. She can be seen taking the form of an owlbear in the trailer.

As the name would suggest, this beast has the body of a bear with an owl head. It can inflict serious piercing damage with its beak while slashing foes with its claws. It is sure to create plenty of chaos in this movie.

5 A Vicious Mimic Will Be Giving Someone A Shock

Another popular D&D monster to be featured in the trailer is the mimic. Mimics are predators that can imitate an inanimate object, allowing them to lure in unsuspecting foes and prey.

The Honor Among Thieves trailer shows a mimic in its chest form, using its tongue to lunge forward with unprecedented speed and momentum. Mimics may not seem as dangerous as the more obvious monsters, but they can prove to be a tricky challenge for those who aren't prepared. It should make for an entertaining encounter in the movie.

4 The Displacer Beast Is Out For Blood

At first glance, the displacer beast may look like nothing more than a mundane panther. Yet at a closer inspection, it is so much more terrifying. Not only does this beast have six legs instead of four, but it has two very noticeable tentacles protruding from its shoulders with spikes on the ends.

The brief showing of one in the trailer has it doing what it does best, lunging at its foes. Its appearance seems to be within a colosseum-like setting, suggesting some kind of galditorial contest.

3 A Gelatinous Cube Is A Questionable Means Of Escape

In the arena scene, the main group is shown diving to avoid the clutches of the displacer beast, but they dive straight into a large cube. Judging by the dead corpse already in there, this is a gelatinous cube. Despite being unassuming in appearance, gelatinous cubes can actually be one of the deadlier monsters in the realms of Dungeons & Dragons.

Anyone trapped inside faces an uphill battle getting out, as they fight against the additional prospect of acid damage slowly dissolving them. It could certainly be a way for the main crew to keep safe from the displacer beast, but it would just put them into a whole new world of trouble.

2 Some Form Of Huge Red Dragon Will Be A Formidable Foe

While there are multiple dragons in the Honor Among Thieves trailer, the bulky red dragon is arguably one of the more memorable inclusions. The casual viewer may see it simply as another variant of dragon, like a red dragon, but it bears a striking resemblance to a dragon called Themberchaud.

In the Out of the Abyss adventures, Themberchaud is a gigantic overweight red dragon who resides on a substantial treasure hoard. Yet there are certainly other directions this particular dragon could go, only adding to the anticipation for the actual movie to be released.

1 The Third Dragon Has A More Intriguing Design

This particular monster's identity is still up for debate at this point. It appears to be another dragon, but its lack of a breath weapon means this is not yet confirmed. In fact, it could well be a variant of a stone golem, going by its stony aesthetic and statue-like features.

A statue coming to life is not beyond the realms of possibility in D&D. The fact that the beast is surrounded by buildings while at ground level only helps to support this theory further. Whatever its actual name and purpose, it is sure to create trouble, especially in an area likely to be full of civilians.
