The Dungeons & Dragon movie will not be a comedy, but audiences can rest assured that the upcoming film will not be devoid of laughs.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Dungeons & Dragons writers and directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein explained the tone they are aiming for. The adaptation of the role-playing game will have comedic moments, but the duo insisted that it will not be turned into a parody of Dungeons & Dragons. "We want it to be fun. It's not an out and out comedy, but it is an action-fantasy movie with a lot of comedic elements and characters we hope people will really get into and enjoy watching their adventures," Goldstein explained.

"D&D is such a unique look at the fantasy genre where it is contemporary in terms of the people playing it and the way they speak to each other," Daley elaborated, "So we never wanted to spoof the genre of fantasy or take the piss out of it. But we did want to find another way into it that we hadn't necessarily seen before." He continued, "Just the format of Dungeons & Dragons is so interesting and fun and all about critical thinking and thinking on your feet and figuring out ways to make things work after they fall flat. There's a lot of the spirit of that that we're trying to inject into the movie itself."

Daley and Goldstein are a writer/director duo best known for directing both the 2015 comedy Vacation and the 2018 comedy Game Night. They were also two of the screenwriters of Spider-Man: Homecoming. Daley has also worked as an actor, including a lead role on the acclaimed sitcom Freaks & Geeks.

The duo's next directorial effort, Dungeons & Dragons, is slated for release on May 27, 2022.
