Screenwriter Eric Roth provided an update on the status of the sequel to the upcoming Denis Villeneuve adaptation of Dune.

"I [wrote] a treatment to show the estate what we could do with the second half," Roth said to Collider. "But I've got to tell you that I think I've done as much as I can do. I also have other things I want to do. I'm 76 years old, and these things obviously take a long time to do. And so I have a few others I'm excited about."

"And hopefully people love Dune so much that they do want to have a second part," Roth added. "And I'm sure Denis would do [an] amazing version of that."

Though a sequel has not been officially green-lit, Villeneuve's adaptation of the novel Dune has always been imagined as spanning two movies, with the inaugural film covering the first half of the book. This incarnation of the source material is also planned to include a spinoff TV show on HBO Max entitled Dune: The Sisterhood.

Directed by Denis Villeneuve from a script he co-wrote with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts, Dune stars Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Zendaya as Chani, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto Atreides, Stellan Skarsgård as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Chang Chen as Dr. Wellington Yueh, Sharon Duncan-Brewster as Dr. Liet Kynes, Charlotte Rampling as Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam, Dave Bautista as Glossu Rabban, David Dastmalchian as Piter De Vries, Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, Stephen Henderson as Thufir Hawat and Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck. The film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max Oct. 1.
