Before Dune hits theaters this year, fans will have a chance to learn more about the time before the events of the film thanks to a prequel comic series.

BOOM! Studios has acquired the comic book and graphic novel publishing license to Dune: House Atreides, the prequel novel to the original Dune. The 12-issue limited series will be written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, who co-wrote the original novel, and drawn by Raul Allen and Patricia Martin with covers by Bill Sienkiewicz.

Dune: House Atreides is set on the desert planet Arrakis where a coup is being planned. Young Duncan Idaho seeks to escape the yoke of slavery; he ends up encountering a man named Leto Atreides. The two soon learn that their actions will change the very course of the universe itself.

Dune: House Atreides holds a special place in my heart. It was the first novel Kevin and I wrote in my father's fantastic Dune universe, and it is our first collaborative novel to be adapted for comics." Herbert said in a statement.

The original Dune focuses on a feudal society of noble houses, most notably House Atreides. Young Paul Atreides is sent to the planet of Arrakis, where he too learns that he is destined to shape the future. The novel has spawned several spinoffs and was previously adapted for film by David Lynch.

Herbert and Anderson will also be adapting the original Dune novel into a trilogy of graphic novels. The new Dune film adaptation, directed by Denis Villeneuve, will premiere in theaters on December 18.
