Dune director Denis Villeneuve has few details to spill about the film's planned HBO Max prequel series, Dune: The Sisterhood, at this time. Nevertheless, he seems to be rather excited about the project.

Villeneuve, alongside Dune star Rebecca Ferguson, recently sat down with Variety. During the interview, the director briefly discussed Dune: The Sisterhood, though declined to confirm or deny whether an earlier version of Ferguson's Lady Jessica would appear in the series. "It's a beautiful project, but it's in development," Villeneuve said. "And when things are in development, I have a tendency, I want to protect them because it's in a fragile state."

Following multiple delays, at least one of which can be directly attributed to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Denis Villeneuve's Dune is slated to release in theaters and on HBO Max on Oct. 22. Produced by Legendary Pictures and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, the film is the second big-screen adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic 1965 sci-fi novel of the same name, following David Lynch's Dune, which released in 1984. Following its premiere at the 78th Venice International Film Festival on Sept. 3, Villeneuve's reboot has debuted to a solid 88 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Villeneuve previously confirmed that his take on Dune would cover roughly half of Herbert's original novel, leaving the rest to be tackled in a potential sequel. The director recently went on record saying he is already penning the script for Dune: Part Two. He even says he's ready to start shooting Part Two as early as next year, provided he gets the green light from Warner Bros. and Legendary.

Back in mid-2019, WarnerMedia ordered Dune: The Sisterhood -- a prequel series that would serve as a companion to Villeneuve's film reboot -- for its then-unnamed streaming platform, now known as HBO Max. At the time, it was revealed that Jon Spaihts, who co-wrote the new Dune film alongside Villeneuve and Eric wroth, would write the series and serve as showrunner. In late-2019, however, it was reported that Spaihts had exited as showrunner. Earlier this year, The Sisterhood found a new showrunner in Diane Ademu-John.

Dune: The Sisterhood will focus on the Bene Gesserit, an all-female organization that serves as a key social, religious and political force in the Dune mythology. The aforementioned Lady Jessica, mother of main protagonist Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), is a powerful member of the Bene Gesserit.
