The modern DuckTales has been bridging the gaps between various Disney Animated series from the 1980s and 1990s. This has led to a shared universe that connects all the heroes into one world - which is good news for the Duck family, as an insidious conspiracy is growing against them. In an exclusive interview with CBR, DuckTales Executive Producers Matt Youngberg and Co-Executive Producer/Story Editor Francisco Angones spoke about bringing an entire universe of Disney cartoon characters together for the new season, and what it makes so special to them.

The upcoming third season of the show will introduce even more characters to the universe from across other classic cartoons from the Disney Afternoon programming block. This includes more heroes and villains from shows that have already been incorporated into the universe like Darkwing Duck, as well as new additions from sources such as TaleSpin and Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers. An entire universe has grown out of this new modern version of DuckTales, just as the original Disney Afternoon cartoon block did with the first DuckTales series.

Looking back at his own time as a fan of the franchise, Youngberg was quick to describe how "we love DuckTales. We specifically love it. We loved everything about it, it's been a real honor to work on DuckTales. But beyond DuckTales, there's the rest of the Disney Afternoon that we grew up on. DuckTales was like, the jumping-off point. Then some DuckTales people loved Darkwing Duck, some loved TailSpin, some loved Rescue Rangers... It was like that on the crew, and we wanted to represent that on the show.

"DuckTales is the jumping-off point for the Disney Afternoon Universe. This whole idea that all of these shows could come together in some way, we love being able to explore that and having the chance to do that was, [we had to take it]. If we want to do something with Darkwing, let's do it. If we want to do something with Tailspin, let's do it. It's this really great opportunity to say, 'we love DuckTales and everything else, we want to show you how much we love it.'"

For Angones, he ended up drawing on a much more personal idea inspired by the advice of a former employer on how to approach characters from his childhood. "I stole a notion from a previous boss of mine, Lauren Faust from My Little Pony. She said 'I gave all the characters the personalities that I gave my toys when I was playing with them at home.' And, like, that's right. To address these characters the way we used to play as these characters when we were kids. I always assumed that Darkwing Duck and DuckTales happened in the same universe and had a connection because of Launchpad. You would see little cameos pop up in Aladdin or Rescue Rangers here or there."

At the end of the day, what is at the core of the universe is Scrooge McDuck. Created in 1947 by Carl Barks, the character has helped lead to entire generations of new material -- even now helping set off a new franchise."Creating a shared world out of all these shows and use up ideas," Angones explained, "that's really exciting. Part of the joy of this show has been the world-building. It all comes off of Scrooge. It all comes off of that original DuckTales series spawning the success of the Disney afternoon. All things in Disney Afternoon come from Scrooge. We always used to say Scrooge was out Tony Stark. And now that's really true! We've explored all these different characters and brought them into one shared Disney Afternooniverse. It's really cool."

DuckTales Season 3 stars the voices of David Tennant, Danny Pudi, Ben Schwartz, Bobby Moynihan, Kate Micucci, Beck Bennett, Toks Olagundoye, Tony Anselmo and Paget Brewster. The two-episode season premiere hits Disney XD on Saturday, April 4.
