DuckTales features a massive and ever-increasingly mass of characters, but it always finds a way to give one of the core triplets more attention and depth per season. The upcoming third season of the show will push the family even further than before, with a nefarious conspiracy forcing the family to think their way around their most powerful enemy yet. So it makes sense for the show to push Huey into a central role.

During an exclusive interview with CBR, DuckTales Co-Executive Producer and Story Editor Francisco Angones spoke about why the conspiracy-minded season was the perfect time for Huey to take center stage.

DuckTales has shifted perspective and objective across the run of the series, which has been a purposeful direction for the series. This has allowed Angones and the rest of the crew on the show to explore different characters and themes at different points of the series. Angones explained that "the first season was about the past. the second season was about the present and figuring out to roll with the punches about the unexpected. The third season is about legacy and what legacy the family has. We started the show by having Scrooge being the sole 'greatest adventurer' in the world, the 'richest duck in the world.' And now he's got a whole family and more extended family. What does that do him?"

Each season of the show was also somewhat focused on a different member of the family as a result. The first season was largely motivated by Dewey's attempts to find out more about what happened to their mother, Della. The second season was set up early on as Louie's efforts to start his own business and become rich. The upcoming third season will shift to Huey and his attempts to help the family against F.O.W.L. "We always viewed Huey as the more intrepid of everyone," Angones explained. "He's more studious, he wants to know things, he's always trying to figure out how things work. That's why he's the prime Junior Woodchuck."

That inquisitive nature will come in handy for the cast, as the insidious F.O.W.L. conspiracy against the family threatens them without the family even being aware. Introduced at the conclusion of the second season, F.O.W.L. is has dedicated themselves to bringing down the Duck family once and for all. With their machinations set to spread around the world, it felt natural to Angones "to have [Huey] be the lead of the season where nothing's what it seems and everything is a shocking twist and their whole world is completely upended. That felt right. Huey is always one who is always on the search for knowledge, so having him be the lead of this big conspiracy-minded season felt interesting."

DuckTales Season 3 stars the voices of David Tennant, Danny Pudi, Ben Schwartz, Bobby Moynihan, Kate Micucci, Beck Bennett, Toks Olagundoye, Tony Anselmo and Paget Brewster. The two-episode season premiere hits Disney XD on Saturday, April 4.
